System Pics 2020

I would tend to agree with this suggestion. No harm trying and similarly would feel that things will improve.

I would try swapping the positions of the right hand chair and the right hand speaker. This is because I don’t like placing speakers in room corners.

Interesting. I had thought that the advice always used to be to sit at the apex of an equilateral triangle, so the speakers were the same distance apart as the distance between you and each speaker.

There was something on here recently about the Cardas Golden Ratio. I had simply plonked my speakers in the only place they can feasibly go in my room, either side of the fireplace, and moved them apart until I got the best sound. I’d never heard about the ratio until I read about it so I measured my speakers - it turned out they they were exactly on the ratio by luck rather than intent. I think it might be 1:1.6 rather than 1.8, I’m not sure.

My speakers point straight ahead, and if they were at 1:1 there would be a big hole in the middle of the sound stage. Some speakers are designed to point at your ears, or for the sound to cross either just in front or just behind abs in that case being further apart might make more sense. The Kudos in the picture that prompted this are pointing straight ahead and thus appear far too far apart. But it may sound great of course. That said, having one by the wall is not good, they need space to the sides.

I thought it was 0.8 between tweeters and 1.0 in front of a line between the speakers.

Thanks - clearly I’m confused! I’m not using the Cardas golden triangle at all, rather the HOP ratio.

The HOP ratio can be dangerous to use since it varies from crop to crop and farmer to farmer :joy:

Thought I would chip in, tweeter to tweeter on my SL2s measure 1.85mtr and my ears are 2.8mtrs away and for some reason fallen lucky with this setup in my room and is a real sweet spot.

Speakers fire directly forward.

HiFiman,

every time your wife looks strange at you while you’re dealing with your hifi, go to the bathroom and count the number of all types of accessories she owns for the care of her body and face. We have a 1,20 mt. long glass shelf in a bathroom under a mirror, plus various small boxes and drawers, and I swear I couldn’t find space for a burnt match on that shelf.

And I bet if you moved one item on that shelf she would notice

Absolutely.

I’ve been using a pair of 606s for several months they replaced a pair of Spendors D7s.

Mine are 2.2 metres apart either side of a fireplace, 2.4 metres from the listening chair and 260mm from the back wall.

I must agree with the comments regarding the positioning of the right hand speaker Kudos recommend that they should be well away from corners and it will be worthwhile experimenting to get the best out of your speakers.

When the dealer installed the demo 606s in my room he was quite surprised that the 606s needed to be closer to the rear wall and with no toe in to sound at there best particularly regarding the soundstage and imaging as compared to the position of the D7s.

At least you have got a couple of comfy chairs to relax in if you do decide to move/reposition your speakers as they are a bit on he heavy side.

All this talk of speaker positioning had me move my D9s around. It turned out to be exhausting but worth my while. In the end I positioned them closer to the listening position as the speaker wall now is closer. I also toed them out so they fire straight ahead. I prefer this as of now but know myself why this most likely only will last a short while😁

Distance from front center of speaker to wall is now 1,828m and distance from center of cones to side walls are 1,128m😁

Ok so moved things around slightly. Speakers now 68” apart and listening at118” back from them. I can’t move the hifi as it is on a dedicated supply from the consumer unit. I will have a listen and see if any difference is heard. I didn’t need so much speaker cable either which I need to tidy up.
