System Pics 2020

Thanks that’s very helpful

That’s a very nice multi generational combination there.

Awesome setup…

Yesterday I finally got round to moving the Unitiserve out of the listening room and on to a shelf in my eves:

The main reason for doing this was to get rid of the annoying hard drive noise from the US. I had tried to mitigate this by putting the US behind a door in the Ikea BESTA unit but even behind the door I could still hear the thing.

I’ll have to make sure it doesn’t get too hot in the eves space and I can always move it back easily if it does but for now it’s blissful silence when the music is off!

Hi,
it’s supremely functional and elegant.
When I transferred my CDs on an SSD support, I skimmed at least 120, probably more. I realized that I wasn’t actually interested in most of what I had bought. I have 288 files on my Mac. It’ll take me time to reach 300 I believe.

Just out of curiosity, do you also have a bookshelf?
Thanks

When I had Naim, it was useful to reach the kitchen crossing the living room without bumping into furniture. Now I have just one little red spot (the Bricasti’s stand-by led) so when I go to have a nighttime glass of water I can imagine it’s a one-eyed wolf stalking in a corner. Much more fun.

Hi Yorkshireman, it is on a mana rack - a bit like a fraim. No issues with vibration, and it is a suspended wooden floor.

Hi FR, I think they were £6k new, but mine only cost me 2k. The improvement was relatively subtle, but worthwhile. The EAR is a good sounding unit. I only noticed the bass was a bit plummy in comparison. Also transients were a bit faster and you feel closer to the musicians somehow. But I think it is a case of diminishing returns.

The pleasant surprise having bought the NDX2, was that it controls the volume of the NAC72 and also allows Roon to control it too. Even though the pre is 30 years old.

I take it you’re fixing the volume setting on the 72 and then using the NDX2 with its internal volume control to allow remote control. You may find it sound better with a fixed output but then you’ll have to get up to adjust volume on the 72…

It’s not actually controlling the volume of the 72. It’s not possible. All you are doing is using the digital volume control of the NDX2, which is only there in order to achieve some certification of other. You’ll get better sound if you set the NDX2 to fixed output.

Thank you for the nice words.

Bookshelves? I presume you’re asking for books. If so, yes, several. I can pics if you’re interested, but they’re less exciting than the CD shelves  I had to be creative for the CD shelves as I wanted as much music storage as possible in the living room, where my hifi is.

Close by, I also have shelves for records, though couldn’t get too creative here for obvious reasons.

Also DVD shelves … my wife accuses me of hoarding. I protest, but she’s not too wrong

After a lot of changes in the last 2 years, time to sit back and enjoy the music.

Is the noise from your US constant? I ask because my first one was never silent. I questioned this with my dealer, and he told me that was normal, but I should probably have persisted. The offending US got its comeuppance when it was destroyed by a lightning strike, and the replacement was pretty much completely silent except when ripping.

That’s quite some record collection. Very nice shelves too.

Hi Chris - the noise is just the usual hard drive whirring sound computers make. It’s not too bad just annoying when I’m trying to work in silence. To be honest I can’t be bothered to have dealer / Naim look in to it and I think it’s probably completely normal. It rips CDs fine and feeds music to my NDS as I’d expect it to. One day it will fail like all computers do and when it dies I’ll probably get a Core which I understand is completely silent.

Collaro makes also covers?

Nice system!

Clive, can you post a picture of your plinth. Chris has some wenge stock he could start a plinth for me. I would like to see one outside of his website. It is suppose to be the best sounding of all the woods.

You are completely right, but it is nevertheless a volume control. I find that tracks that play in Roon/Tidal vary in volume from artist to artist and I’d be up and down like a bride’s nighty during a session. Good exercise but irritating. :slightly_smiling_face:

Here you go. Sorry about the picture quality, I just took it with my iPad. It’s a very dense wood, which might explain the sound. They’re certainly not cheap, but are beautifully made and finished.
