System Pics 2020

Beautiful room with a view and system!

What speakers are you using?

You’ll have a P10 this time next year :rofl::rofl:

The risk is to not listening anymore to the 272.

It’s been a challenge to work out where to put the Fono, but I’ve now sussed it. It seems to work pretty well despite being somewhat Heath Robinson.

Be interested to know what you think of the Iota Explorers, definitely on the of interest list, what did you choose them over and why?

Hi! They are Iota Alphas and I have just bought my second pair. I was looking at PMC’s, Harbeth, Scansonic, ATC, Spendor and LS3/5A types of speakers. The Iota Alpha is fast, detailed but never sharp an is very easy to fit in my room. It has detailed bass and goes low enough for me. I could buy better speakers, but in my opinion, not for that kind of money. I guess the Explorers is more of the good stuff.

Good thinking Nigel - a very neat solution.

Speakers are Naim Credo, bought second hand many years ago and never regretted.

Grossly underrated speakers. Bought mine new in 1999 and they are still going strong in my second system. Love them so much.

Apologies again for the photos. The BTE Designs passive which has a pretty exceptional TDK mechanical potentiometer inside is now sitting happily in the hospital trolley and I have to say it has done what it’s supposed to which is let the Quad do it’s thing.
Right out of the box it built on what the little Tisbury started and the main thing that jumps right out is the bass it’s so detailed and clean it’s the first time that I’ve really heard what these Dynaudio speakers are capable of.
Unusually for me my go to reference track isn’t on vinyl but a Tidal stream of Dabeull’s Intimate Fonk EP it’s full of EDM tracks that take you straight back to the mid 80’s. The electronic basslines sound full of texture rather than just a dull thud.
My digital front end is very humble a Fiio M9 DAP connected via spdif out to a Musical Fidelity V DAC/V PSU but it’s sounding like an absolute giant killer tonight.
I played a few old Jazz LP’s that I don’t usually play and in the case of two have never played as I wanted to see how the system sounded with something I’m not listening to lately and also for me it’s pointless testing a new piece of equipment with beautifully pressed and expensive records because what I’m looking for is a system that can play ALL of my records in a way that makes me want to listen them all and I have to say it passed with flying colours.

Hi @Bobthebuilder

After a few listening sessions maybe you could tell us about how a passive pre compares to an active pre ?

And approx how much would such a custom design pre cost ? A ball park estimate will do…

And did u try a matching quad pre amp ?

Thanks

After the weekend I will do a write up and try to answer your questions.

I think mine were 2003, from Shore Hifi in Takapuna. I had a Naim 92/90 then, the speakers have kept up with many upgrades.

Likewise I bought my Credos in 2000 and they are still going strong surviving the upgrade in all the kit feeding them.

Hi, my mistake, I know how compact the Alpha’s are and looked larger in the picture so assumed the Explorers. Definitely an interesting range and once the lockdown starts to ease away must get a listen at my local dealers.
