System Pics 2020

I have a somewhat different problem. My wife’s idea of a system upgrade is a Marshall stack.

I have been running Proac DB 1’s since the middle of last year & been thrilled with them, finding them detailed, balanced & non-fatiguing. In a smallish room they do what Proac claim for them, i.e. sound a lot larger than they are.

The D2R’s were a bit larger than I wanted but from the reviews I have seen (all with conventional tweeters), they are something else & punch way above their weight. Envy you the ribbon tweeters (which my dealer prefers) & would audition my DB 1’s in a shot if they were offered with ribbons.

Sure they will sound sensational when fully run in which, with most Proacs, shouldn’t take long.

Like the cabinet match with the TV stand/record rack. I did the same with my walnut cabinets & custom made solid walnut unit which you can see in my earlier post in this thread on 13.1.20.

I have a Strat & Les Paul & a 10 watt Marshall practice amp which has never been above 1 on the volume control. At this volume I don’t really sound like Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page. They probably wouldn’t either…

How about a wife swap?

Ahem - steady on chaps, this isn’t that sort of forum. At least, if it is, I’ve really not been reading between the lines very well.

Haha. WAF (wife acceptance factor). A funny topic. My wife is quite accepting as long as i have plenty of time between upgrades. The thing that drives me crazy is the phrase “it sounds the same”. What she hasn’t realised since the big speaker upgrade is that i am now playing at much louder volumes on both movies and music and i don’t get told “turn it down!”
Distortion is only noticed when it’s taken away!

Maybe you just can’t hear now. :grinning:

Anyone seen anything like this before?

No

You may not have seen anything like them but you have probably felt the bass even across the ditch.

I’ve always had audio systems in our living rooms, from before we got married. Ive also never let Mrs. Opus make it an issue. As I don’t really bother about all the clothes and other lady crap.

My partner said the octagonal speakers above are ugly but otherwise has never complained and enjoys the musical journey as much as I do. She was keen for Focal Grande Utopias when she seen a picture of them in that lovely blue. Way out of my modest budget but we can dream, there’s always the lottery to fall back on.

Looks like a nice place to put some fruit.

It’s fun to put ping pong balls in them and watch them bounce at low volume, when it’s a bit louder they all leap out in a couple of seconds.

What are they??

They are home made, unfortunately I can’t take credit for the cabinets which are very well made with an oak veneer and apparently a German design. I was lucky enough to buy them for $50 with very sad bass and mid drivers which I replaced with cheap Response drivers, I was amazed at how they sound for a cost of only around $350.

The TV cabinet is actually an Ikea Besta frame plus optional legs. It takes LPs really nicely.

Wouldn’t be any good here - I think my wife would still try to put plant pots on top of it.
