I love the wine rack.
Thank you… got it from Germany a few years back. There were also a couple of smaller models - guitar (4 bottles) and violin (2 bottles). Adds a touch of quirkiness to the space, especially with the shelf above it being made from an actual wine barrel…
Ah very nice, I was looking enviously at that shelf, it’s a really classy piece with the lighting.
LOL. i was starting to type “nice Cello”.
It’s one of those instruments that take you to another world (provided you keep it well stocked up)
Practice… we need to practice…
What are your speakers, please? How do you find them working with them being backed into a corner against the fireplace? I have potential placement issues, so am considering PMC when I can get out to audition.
What’s new this past 12 months…EE switch, BJC ethernet and yoga mat😀…and I finally got round to sorting my cabling, I.e no two cables directly touch, speaker cable off the floor…also my full vinyl collection of 1 album, my first Springsteen album almost 41 years ago😳
Hi what’s the difference in sound quality against the focals.
Hi Iain. These are the speakers that I built last year to replace my old B&W DM 601 S3s. All the (UK) dealerships were closed at the time so I decided that spending money blindly on something I can’t listen to / evaluate would not be very wise. Being mindful of the neighbors, I chose a less sensitive subwoofer (89 vs 91 db compared to the tweeter and midranges ) + a forward facing port to attenuate the bass and allow a near wall placement. I hope you’re able to find your perfect speakers soon - they undoubtedly make the biggest difference to the sound signature + how we experience the music.
Thanks for the comprehensive response. The speakers look great and I’m glad you managed to get what you wanted by your own hand. Very impressive.
I’d like to know more about that painting - very intriguing.
All-black Fraim looks good for your kit also.
The painting is one of 6* that I have by the same painter who happens to be my brother in law’s brother**, bizarrely he has the same surname and initials as me (DOR) so when people I know first enquired I’d say ‘look at the initials, what do you think of my new hobby’
- the one in the picture is one of a series of 3. He has also painted for me (via my wife, Christmas presents), my fave bar in Belfast (The crown) and Springsteen. Finally the last one is very much like the Irish singer Christy Moore
** lives in Belfast, school teacher and massive Clash fan
Hi David
How far from the wall are the 804d3?
Hopefully my next bit of new gear.
BobF
Just 6 inches. I’d imagine the distance should be greater than that (just checked and should be 0.5m*) but to be honest they sound good only 6 inches away. Bass nicely controlled.
- might have a play around with the distancetomorrow
Many thanks David. For domestic harmony I’m wanting to position them about 6" from the wall. They will be about 7ft apart with 5ft to the side walls, so I’m hoping they will be ok.

Does the Atom have enough power to run those speakers?
I have found with 804D3 that they are more sensitive to side wall position than rear wall. Also toeing in too much can also can cause issues if going for an AV set up.
Im not an audiophile so cant really describe it well. I would say the bass is tighter n more coherent as a whole speaker. Its more musical. It also goes lower n deeper as per what is stated on it specs.
It appeals to my taste.
Not sure where to put this item … here or “Latest purchase” …
There have been, and maybe still are, a number of threads on the forum regarding speakers on carpets and whether to couple or decouple. My story:
I have PureAudioProject Open Baffle speakers … 60lbs apiece … magnificent speakers. They came with Soundcare SuperSpike feet (see below) which even though they are spikes they sit in a housing which has felt feet and sit flat on the floor. My speakers sat on a solid slate floor and the sound was superb … yada yada yada …
Then a month ago we moved … new room has a concrete floor with a thick felt pad and a rather deep pile carpet on top … any music which did not have any bass was still wonderful … add bass and it was terrible. A miasma of sound … individual instruments were lost and all that was produced was a thick roiling mumble.
Speaker with Soundcare Superspikes squatting on the carpet:
The operative word here is “ON” the carpet … the vibration on the top of the speaker was nearly enough to make milk shakes at serious, call the sheriff, volume.
The Solution … Gaia III Carpet Spikes … Yes, yes I know … these are designed specifically for Gaia III feet but what the hey … the feet on my speakers have a 3mm diameter, the Gaia III are 4mm and are designed to snugly fit the Gaia’s …
Gaia III carpet spikes:
This what the undersides look like …
The spikes go right through the carpet and the felt pad and my speakers, with their existing feet, sit right on top in the little “cups” … the improvement was immediate.
At rattling the windows volume the music stayed together, all instruments easily discernible and the bass was absolutely wonderful.
… New configuration,
“old” speaker feet sitting in Gaia III carpet spikes …
Great upgrade …
