System Pics 2021

I am part way through installing Ethernet hard wiring (to allow me to loose the Ethernet-Over_power adaptors I have). The Ethernet sockets and the wiring configuration seems remarkably like Phone wiring. Perhaps more ways in the Ethernet - 8 way - rather than just 6 ways for a Phone socket…? The actual connections are identical, though.

Do post when you have got it all working.

I have phone sockets in every room (except the bathrooms)

Having had a look now in more detail, I think what is probably going to defeat me on my house is that behind the sockets there is not a lot of free cable to assist with the final connection. Plus there are two cables at each socket, one in and one out, which makes me think its wired in a ring rather than cables going to a central point. So I suspect to make it work properly I would need two sockets and a switch at every point.

Is it possible to put ethernet over the co-ax tv cable? I do have that in most rooms with a central marshalling in the roof.

You mean my Ethernet…? Its just sockets & cable. Nothing to see… lols.

Ethernet & Phone are similar, in the cable and sockets - but NOT the same (as far as I can see).

No AFAIK, Ethernet cannot go via TV CoAx. Unless you pull the CoAx out & run Ethernet cable in…?

A bit of history - back in the 1980s Ethernet was over coax cable, the twisted pair didn’t come along until 1990 (I think)

There is a modern solution called MoCA which runs over suitable coax alongside TV signals. Never tried it but could be worth reading up on.

@RichardPW - Oooh… more info. Love it. Thank you…!!!

(just checked - and Google can find lots of things for ‘MoCA Ethernet over Coax’ )

Fortunately, I can relatively easily run a ordinary, modern Ethernet cable, so I am sorted.

The 1980’s ethernet was a loop so to speak, and a break in the circuit (failed network card, loose connection and so on) meant that the whole circuit failed, no computer connection to the network. The last connection on the line was a teminator to prevent reflections of the signal. Troubleshooting was a challenge. Modern ethernet is distributed from the switch with seperate with cable for each computer, (compared with the thick and thin ethernets of the 1980’s, and earlier). Big changes in the speed of course.

So much fun on school with the token ring system

I assumed that the 4 twisted pairs that are inside a RJ45 connection, were just an extension of old school post office twisted pair wiring. I see that newer cat 7 and 8 appear to be adding shielding and earthing now.

P3 now with a new mat to match the cart, also now has the new Rega reference belt, same on my Rp6 now.

MF- MX-Dac awaiting its new updated power supply, will be interesting hear what if any differences it makes.

It was you…

Such a time waster…

Later no doubt you learnt about looping a patch lead between two network outlets!

Till I learnt about configuring the switch using putty!! or hyperterm!!

I left after cat 6 (and fibre) was being introduced…

All about the speed…

In the UK at least, only 3 wires are needed for internal telephone wiring. But it’s easy to use cat5 for that if you have a 300m reel in the back of the van already.
However telephone sockets are wired in series, i.e. BT master socket → phone socket 1 → phone socket 2 → phone socket 3. So if you are hoping to reconfigure the telephone sockets and replace them with cat5 wall sockets, you might not be in luck as the wires are unlikely to feed back to where you want to put your router/switch.

If that’s the case with the wiring, then the “messy” way to do it would be to daisy chain switches. e.g. telephone socket 1 → socket 2 … replace socket 1 with a twin cat5 faceplate, so the in and out wires connect to each faceplace socket. Connect a switch to the left hand socket, and connect the same switch back to the right hand socket which will then terminate at telephone socket 2 in another room where you can repeat with another switch.

Kitchen is the Neat Iotas

Other end of the kitchen is the summer room with the xplorers and if you stand in midway between the kitchen and the summer room you get a great soundstage of all 4 speakers.
