System Pics 2023

Stover, very interested in your experience. Seems you like the new line the most of all sets? Could you point weaknesses of SN3? Is it anything which not allowed you to live with it?

Andre1. Replacing 282/250 with the SN3 using Sopra 2 was a major step down in my room. The former is really good. I suspect there became an amp/ speaker mismatch in comparison and where the 282 had a major impact to the great performance. If one find a suited speaker, SN3 is a very nice amp (the MM phonostage included) I have no negatives towards SN3, but systembalance must always be taken care of.

Indeed amp/speaker match is so important. Recently was surprised that two amplifiers, which are very close work so different with same speakers.

It’s impressive that that has happened so quickly. I assume Naim do not have shelves of these sitting around.

S1…on a shelf?

Doubt it.

Yes I thought that wasn’t quite the right phrase

Latest view of my Naim Isoblue ‘stack’ - with an additional level added (*).

(* - No, there is nothing going on the spare level, at this point - I just wanted a bit more space.)

I wonder what happens to your old one? Assuming it’s not completely broken do Naim have a “pre-loved” selection of S1s at the factory?

Maybe they fix it up and give it to Richard in recognition of his sterling efforts in overseeing the Forum.

I think that they sell ‘factory refurbs’ through the dealer network. They do come up on eBay.

However I agree, Richard does deserve it for his very professional (and no doubt time consuming) moderating of the forum. I would also suggest that Naim sells an awful lot of equipment as a result of discussions on here so Richard’s roll has supported this.

I might do a thread at some point to discuss the design process but here is the completed speaker section of my Open Baffle project. Whoever said OB speakers don’t have bass🤷.

The drivers are:

SB Acoustics SB20FRPC30-8 - full range - this driver is quite something for the price. It is 8ohms nominal and runs without crossovers off whatever stereo amp I choose to use.

Lower main baffle SB Acoustics SB20PFCR30 8 ohm versions wired in parallel to a 4ohm load. Run in stereo and low passed at circa 150hz.

SB Audience Bianco-150B350 - designed specifically for OB applications - run mono in it’s own baffle with small side wings. Fills in the lowest notes.

Everything is effectively active at line level.

Amplification for the bass sections is currently 3 x 100 watt Nob Sound G2 subwoofer amps. They work well for what they are. However I plan to purchase a good quality 12v high current power supply and will run this:

A Genesis Four Channel Class A/B that I bought serviced from the man who used to own Genesis Car Audio. These are well- known in car audio circles. This particular example was serviced by Gordon Taylor and will run the lower sections of the towers in stereo. The ‘rear channels’ will be bridged mono to run the Bianco. The amp has all the crossovers I need already.
