The Beatles in Mono Boxed Set - 2025

Looking on the Tracking Angle website, it looks like there could be a second life for the much applauded 2014 vinyl box set. For those that missed it first time round, myself included, this will be welcome news.

It’s currently only listed on The Beatles US store and priced at $545, but hopefully it will follow on to the UK store soon. Edit - now on the UK store as a pre-order.

As we are past April 1st, I’m hoping its not a hoax!

The blurb…

"The Beatles In Mono. Available to pre-order for the first time in 10 years.

*180-gram LPs, available in a limited 14LP boxed edition with hardbound book. *

*The Beatles in Mono: this is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960s, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary. *

In an audiophile-minded undertaking, The Beatles’ acclaimed mono albums were mastered in 2014 for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by GRAMMY®-winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY®-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz.

While The Beatles In Mono CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.

Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles’ albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe. Manufactured for the world at Optimal Media in Germany, The Beatles’ albums are presented in their original glory, both sonically and in their packaging. The boxed collection’s exclusive 12-inch by 12-inch hardbound book features new essays and a detailed history of the mastering process by award-winning radio producer and author Kevin Howlett. The book is illustrated with many rare studio photos of The Beatles, fascinating archive documents, and articles and advertisements sourced from 1960s publications."

Yes, £429 here in the UK. Have put in in the basket but can’t bring myself to pull the trigger yet. As much as I love The Beatles that’s ½ of next year’s golf subscription …

Just placed my order..
I missed out first time around.

I’m hovering too. Having spent the last couple of years acquiring early / first mono UK copies, I never expected it to be reissued, choosing the thrill of the chase instead of buying the boxed set at the high used prices.

Just looked again … 74 remaining …
I’d only regret it if I didn’t … 73 left now.

I bought it first time round, but for the life of me can’t remember what I paid - anyone know price back in 2014? Somewhat embarrassingly I think I bought my box set off one of those bad tv stations QVC I think…..)

It’s a lovely thing but I must confess I have only played them a few times….

This chap said he paid £320 for his box set back in '14 (from Amazon)

£250 from Juno back in 2014!!

The box has a tiny dent. Hence price back then. Think it should have been £350-400.

Does anyone who has bought this boxset have any opinions on the sound quality?
Unfortunately the box on mine is damaged so I can’t play them until I reach a resolution on an acceptaple discount, or failing that, a return.
If they sound great I’ll accept a decent discount, if they don’t I’ll just return them.
Regards.

I bought the mono box set on first release and yes they do sound great, well worth having if you love those albums.

Pretty sure the review’s at that time were universally accepting they are the best versions but I have never had any originals to compare but I can say they do sound great

That said like many big box sets that I felt compelled to buy I don’t listen to that often!

They should charge what my yearly golf subscription cost me £294 as it has been released before.

And no Apple USB stick, boo, hiss……..

Disappointing isn’t it?
Couldn’t believe my eyes when I opened my package and saw it was damaged - it’s not like there wasn’t enough packaging on it.
So far they’ve offered me a 10% refund but I don’t feel that comes close to the value that’s been knocked off it.

Yes, very disappointing. Was yours damaged in a similar way? Mine had obviously been dropped on a corner as the outer box was bashed and the foam inside had completely failed.

I haven’t heard back from them, but if they offer 10% then I’m not interested. I would like a replacement at the very least.

Mine is nowhere near as bad as yours - I have a slight ding to one corner and the outer “wrap” is totalled.
They said I could have a replacement if it was still available on the website, but we know there aren’t any.
Very bad customer service that they don’t keep a reserve to replace such eventualities. It’s not like they’d struggle to sell them if they put them up for sale once everyone is happy with what they have.
Yours looks like the courier may have been at fault whereas mine was done by whoever packed it as the outer packaging was flawless.
I’ve told them I want 33% or they’re having it back. Waiting to hear now.
