The Blue Nile

No, it was on Fairfax Road, AFAICR. College Crescent is on the other side of the Finchley Road.

@anon70766008 , I don’t know if it helps in your quest to find the vinyl but there is a major Facebook page dedicated to the TBN. It’s a very active page; the group hold a biennial convention in Glasgow. Paul Buchanan has appeared there. It might be worth joining and posting to see if you can find vinyl copies. The FB group is very enthusiastic and helpful.

I consider myself both privileged and lucky to have see every U.K. tour, sometimes multiple dates. I guess I must have seen them at least a dozen times. The very first time I saw them in Glasgow in 1990 was quite incredible. I think another poster mentioned earlier in this thread that they were moved to tears on one of the nights in Glasgow in 1990. Frankly, I don’t think there was a dry eye in RCN!

Thanks for that, I’m grateful, but I’ve rather given up. It’s just too difficult to find new LPs, and I’m not interested in scraping around in the S/H market.

(I’m reminded of a play that I heard on Radio 3 or 4 a few years ago, the premise of which was that just about everyone had forgotten about The Beatles.)

It is very odd how The Blue Nile’s LPs have simply disappeared. Perhaps they will be re-released to great fanfare sometime in the future (although I won’t hold my breath!).

Have you tried discogs?

I can never break through the hoops that Discogs puts in the way of any sane person trying to buy off the site, so I don’t even try these days. If Discogs were the only means of acquiring music, music would go out of fashion very rapidly.

What “hoops” did you encounter, Graham?
I’ve only bought on Discogs once, admittedly, but it seemed pretty smooth and straightforward.

I’ve read stories of woefully exaggerated condition (my purchase was thankfully not) but I’m not sure what other problems a buyer may run into.

I simply cannot order what I see on screen. I don’t know why.

Don’t worry, my life will go on quite happily without The Blue Nile.

So. Just done a comparative listen to my Hats original vinyl and Hats (original CD) ripped to my Naim Core. Wow, what a difference! The vinyl is warm, lush and plenty of bass (in the best possible way), whereas the rip is very treble heavy and little bass. I am guessing that this is because the rip is from a CD which is taken from the original analogue recording (ADD - digital recording equipment, digital mastering, digital media).

I am wondering if the Qobuz digital version would sound better? Anyone have the Qobuz (there appear to be 2 releases of the deluxe, remastered version by different record labels!).

I also know that there were remastered CD versions of the albums at some point, but they don’t appear on Qobuz. Anyone know if they are available as digital downloads anywhere?

I (like many) prefer the sound of vinyl but I was astounded that there was such a difference in sound between the vinyl and the rip.

By the way my system is a Linn system from the 80’s with the exception of the Naim core and a Chord DAC (my Linn Numeric DAC blew up a year or so ago and I couldn’t find anyone to repair it ).

Not sure on this but the Carol Kidd album on Aloi records was the same year - This was, I believe, Linn’s first venture into recording.

It might (I don’t know) have been the first recording, but AWATR was released about five months before the KIdd…

Saw them twice, first time at Birmingham Town Hall (supported by Shawn Colvin), second at Birmingham Symphony Hall, supported by Sinead Lohan… awesome albums.
Together with Talk Talk they have been the core of my musical life…

Dear all
Just wanted to say - to all who have contributed to this thread - a big thank you.

For me, The Blue Nile have been a major part of my life and long long musical journey.

Bought their first album “A Walk Across the Rooftops”, (1984), shortly after it was first released. And been hooked ever since.

Other musical interests have come and gone. But, TBN have a been a constant.

TBN music and HiFi are also inexplicably linked in my world. “Tinseltown Town in the Rain” is one my few “go to” reference tracks I’ve always used, for anything new or different. It has everything and is beautifully, meticulously recorded. Such a joy. Love the piano chords and string sections.

I’ve just found this thread and read through all 130+ posts here and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m only sorry to have missed this thread before now, as I might have joined in the fun. Alas, looks like it’s all been said already now.

Thanks to @TheKevster for sharing those YouTube links. Particularly enjoyed those :+1:

Except to say, we have original vinyl copies of the first two, which are cherished.
Also, all the original AND remastered versions on CD’s.

Absolute gold dust.

And thank you again.
Isn’t this forum business brilliant?
