The classical music thread

I shall give it a listen. I’ve never played the piano arrangement of the Mozart, but it sounds very nice without too much effort. Very useful in liturgy too.

Another excellent album from Vikingur Olafsson - an outstanding performance.
He played the Etudes for Philip Glass as part of a Birthday celebration for him.
Glass was very impressed.

Excellent new release on Pentatone. No more SACD’s from Pentatone?
That’s a bummer!

This prompted me to have a listen (streaming from Presto) and it’s lovely. Also chatting on Signal to a friend, it turns out that he and his wife went to the concert at Aldeburgh which is where/when this album was recorded.

I never managed to get into the « Fantastique », which was always frustrating as I adore Les Troyens, La Damnation de Faust, Les Nuits d’Ete. And then this version was released a few weeks ago. I love it. It’s muscular, the orchestra is smooth as silk, and the sound in 24/96 is spectacular.

I saw this one too on Qobuz. Warner continues to give its historical treasures the 24/96 remastering treatment.
This is arguably one of the very best « traditional » versions of Le Nozze. No silly tempos (i?), no harsh sounding period instruments, etc. Just the very best from the golden age of opera recording. The singing, from all main characters, is an absolute masterclass.
The stereo sound is superb.

I am going to hear him conduct Fantastique with CSO next season. Orchestra de Paris is no slouch so no doubt the set is good. I got to hear them with Makela doing Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps and it was fantastic! :+1:

Thanks for the suggestion. I have Makela’s Stravinsky/Debussy recording with the same band and found it quite boring. I’ve just ordered the Berlioz/Ravel…fingers crossed!

You can’t have too many recordings of Symphonie fantastique or Ravel’s La valse!!! Amazing music!

I’ve had that on CD for years. Last week I ripped the remastered version from the Giulini box set.

Hopefully she won’t mind me using her recent cd as a test bench for the the newlypurchased AudioMica cables.

I have most of her cds but this is a romantic wonder of delicate precision.
Fine sound from Steinway/ DG.

Is your CD MQA coded? Mine is (not a problem as I have an MQA decoding DAC). Just wondering if they are doing dual inventory. DGP

Not sure how I might discover that information.

Simply a purchase from Europadisc in UK

Surprisingly she’s coming to Chicago next season playing a difficult Ravel’s Concerto’s the Left Hand.
