The Dearth of Naim

As you said it’s just a hobby, our taste changes from time to time. Don’t bother by your past investment. Feel free come and go and always welcome back to Naim.

I swear I will stay with my Accuphase E650 Falcon 3/5a forever last year, but I quickly sold the setup a month after hearing Naim, now full rack of Naim except LP12.

Get a life and enjoy your music.

In this photo are two snaps, a 42 and a 110. Serial numbers of the 42, 110 and snaps without the tractor wheel were sequential.

Luck of the draw maybe?

Back in '84 my 42 was red and 110 green of course. IIRC '86 Hicap was red as well, a later '88 one was green with pvc fascia. Now i have a '85 Hicap with red and alu fascia, other two, both '87 with pvc fascia, one is red i am afraid being not correct, the other one is green

The change to a all green LEDs on the CB shoe-box kit happened around '87. Of course, for years dealers would change the LED colour to suit or match newer purchases, so very possible to find green LEDs on earlier shoebox kit.

The old kit was;

  • NAC 282
  • NAPSC
  • SuperCap DR
  • SNAXO 242 (T606)
  • SuperCap DR
  • NAP 250.2
  • NAP 250 DR
  • Headline
  • NAPSC

All the above had PowerLines.

Plus at the time a Linn Klimax DS/3 Katalyst and Focal Elear headphones and, still have the headphones.

DG…

Naim kit does get rather unmanageable when you want to go active, with the need for a crossover, power supply and another power amp or two. It’s fine if you have a dedicated room but not so good if it needs to live in the sitting room.

Sadly Naim seem to have abandoned active, but fortunately there are other ways to achieve it, in a far more discreet way than was ever possible with Naim.

My Naim investment is much less than it was: an Atom HE, three Qb2s, one powerline for the HE, and two Powerline lites for the active speakers.

I did ponder alternatives to the HE, but one aspect of Naim that I, and even more so Mrs HH, really value is the multiroom. We couldn’t achieve that with say a Linn or Auralic streaming preamp.

At the end of the day it’s about finding something that one can afford and that makes listening to music a pleasure. My little Atom HE and PMCs sounds bloody brilliant, and all for less than £7,000, which some on here will spend on a couple of cables.

This really made me laugh, thanks.

Maybe I’m misremembering. I bought the 110 new in 1983 so it must have been red.

Yes, red would have been standard unless changed to green by a dealer.

I don’t know if your answer is meant to apply to NAP 250 or only to 110s, but my 250 light from 1984 was always green and I am pretty sure it came sealed from the importer (through my dealer). And it’s still green (rebuilt, though) :). FWIW. My Hi-Cap light is read though (same year and rebuilt too).

@1koenig1 , note it just applies to the CB shoe-box kit. The CB NAP160 and NAP250 power buttons were always illuminated in green.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification. I like history

Wot! A dealer opening a box……

Nowadays opening the box usually means the cardboard outer :joy:.

Get a grip man!

You won’t get more than 1m of radon impregnated, dual concentric, bifurcated, omni directional electromagnetically super-shielded, CAT6 cable with rhodium plated terminations for £7000 these days.
