The folk thread

Yes, I think so. These concerts were during 2000 to 2002 while I was doing my masters at York Uni and Saul Rose played on “Common Tongue” which came out late 90s. I am unsure whether he played once or both times. I also saw Matin Carthy solo in a pub in York in the 80s and he was a charismatic and passionate performer. Thank you for jogging my memory.

Some good songs on this.

An album I have really liked since it came out. A nice companion to Linda’s recent release.

I’ve just got some earplugs as there are some old rockers in this band!

Ashley Hutchings 80th Bash was a big ensemble effort. Richard Thompson played a Telecaster. Joe Boyd was in the audience. An enjoyable evening. The older chaps can still play, but as expected some of their voices were time worn. Who knows where the time goes?

Jim Moray covered D$ck Gaughan. Rainbow Chasers were new to me. I should search out Hutchings’ By Gloucester Docks … as I’ve never heard this before.

John Tams was in fine form and got us all singing a shanty. Michael Moloney read a Chekov story.

Mixed feeelings about the gig, first section was at times amateurish but my wife and I felt it got much better especially in last section. The Rainbow Chasers did not impress. The Martin Carthy segment was too painful to watch, his guitar playing is gone as is his voice, why did he perform alone, really needed supporting musicians.
When the band rocked out it was good, but too many dirges
Richard Thompson stood out above the rest as did John Kirkpatrick
Overall glad we went. Picked up Parcel Of Thorns (Gloucester Docks Revisted and Old Love songs) on vinyl for £25- a double so very good price, first listen was good

I went alone, Stephen, as my wife said I’d listened to many of the singers - but she knew she would not have enjoyed the entire evening. Martin Carthy is frail now indeed. There is nostalgia and sadness mingled in some of these performances. I was glad you enjoyed Richard Thompson and much of the final parts of the concert. I hope to see some young talent soon in my next folkish excursion.

Hope this is permitted.

It is all Folk of some sort. Strays a bit too much into Country for my tastes but still a good album nonetheless.
