The Grand Cafe

It’s done automatically by the Discourse platform. Member is Trust Level 3 and Regular is Trust Level 4. You only get to be a Regular if you are here a whole lot (there are detailed and quite complicated rules the software uses). You get automatically demoted to Member if you don’t keep doing all the things that make you a Regular. But if you start doing them again, you are promoted to Regular.

You can google Discourse Trust Levels, but quite a lot of the things that higher Trust levels bring are apparently disabled in the Naim forum. I don’t think it really matters whether one is a Member or a Regular…

True it doesn’t really matter I just don’t understand how it works. I’m on every day and post regularly everyday ( some might say to too much ). I’ve been moved up and down about 5 times.

According to the rules, it’s not just about posting, it’s about reading a certain proportion of all posts, use of likes, being liked etc etc

There doesn’t seem to be a specific mention of Australian, so far as I could see!

Pete, sorry, nothing to do with me. As David says above, it’s all part of how the discourse platform works. The way the Naim forum is set, whether you’re a “regular” or “member” doesn’t make a whole lot of difference.

True it makes no real difference just thought I might have done something. It was rather tongue in cheek but it is a bit weird how it works

Are you getting told when you change, or are you seeking it out? I’ve no idea if mine changes from time to time, though if you’re sent messages then I must be static because I don’t get notifications of change. If you’re going into the badges to find out, it’s easy: don’t as there’s no benefit!

I realised when I ran out of likes this morning on the What Are You Listening To thread. It’s strange for us as we’re out of sync.

I haen’t noticed, but then I’m very sparing with likes so unlikely ever to run out no matter what level.

I spend a lot of time on the what are playing thread and “like” a lot of music. I sometimes run out as a member but not as a regular. That’s how I noticed.

I tend not to follow that thread much because so much doesn’t include anything to give a clue as to what the music is like, therefore meaningless, while posts are so prolific that sometimes when I have dipped in and seen something that I’ve thought I might try following up, when I go back has proved nigh-on impossible to trace… I only dip in now and again - and tend to only award likes when either something really good and unexpected appears (I would award a like if something that I follow up proves to be good - but by then likely no chance of finding the relevant post!)

People not tagging their stuff is an issue but it’s still my favourite thread. I’ve got to listen to a lot of music I wouldn’t have heard. I find it a great source for new music.

Just catching up with this. I have been sold on iPad since I was given one as a leaving present when I retired from full time work. My 2018 iPad Pro is my third but the battery is starting to need recharging more often than I like so I decided to change again. I also use iPhones and I bought a MacBook Pro to replace an old Windows 7 laptop, but I don’t really like that much. After using Windows PCs since the days of Windows 98 (well I did use Windows 3.1 before that but I’m not counting that), I find the conceptual shift involved in using a Mac too irritating, even with Office 365 on it, and I still use the old Windows PC more often than the MacBook Pro.

More in a few weeks time!

I’ve just bought this one from te local charity shop:

It certainly needs cleaning, but it looks in good shape. It has a din connector

I can’t find a model number, but it looks like an entry level Garrard.

Looks like a Garrard SP25 MK3

Thanks. It is bouncing nicely an the platter rotates very good. It just does not stop when I gave it a push

I wonder whether I should use mm or mc cards in my nac72. I have both.

Had a chat with kid nr 1. He is Star Wars freak. He made me just aware that it is ‘May the Forth be with you’ day. May 4.

Looks very similar to my old SP25 Mk 2 from my first home-brew system 50 years ago! However from memory the Mk2 had a knurled ring just behind the headshell to release the removeable headshell, so not that variant.
Awful rumble from the idler wheel if you have speakers that reach into the bass…

As for carts, I wouldn’t think it could cope with a delicate mc - probably something more robust better.

Indeed, I remember being very worried seeing the bass units flapping about with no music playing!

Regarding a suitable cartridge a Shure M75ED was a popular choice back in the day.

There is a Goldring NG2 mounted. It looks that the table is in good shape, the bearings are oiled well and the platter keeps spinning for a long time, much longer than my Project table.

I’ve not been able to listen properly to it, since I would need to cut links in my Nac 72 or need to replace the din connector of the hardwired link of the table. I’m going to buy a Din to bnc or phono adapter to check it out.

Yes, they were all the rage in the 60’s and 70’s. Infuriatingly fiddly to solder they were too, (and still are), especially if you had stereo!
