The missing sound in my upgrade

It should be a superb set up, once all is well.

Perserve and like I said take some pics and we can help out.

As @HungryHalibut said it should sound superb out of the box!

I’m old fashioned. Play a better source into a good preamp and it just gets better.

Bit different with the 272 as the 555PS benefits the preamp section and will improve the sound to all parts. Just like a Supercap does on a 252.

Only @Peter63 can work this out. He has been given the opportunity of help and advice.

He sounds down about it all.

Hey Peter,

Chin up pal. Get the set up right and all will be well!

It should sound amazing!

Thanks Dan, I listen to you. I will work it out, thats how I am, just need some advice :pray:

Except that my experience was that I was very happy with my one-time CDS3 into a Nait XS. Hence my comment.

Who is to say that anyone’s experience here is any more valid than anyone else’s?

As you say, only Peter can work this out.

I think that means dealer? If so, was it an authorised Naim dealer? They should be able to support you in ensuring that you are satisfied with your purchase, and the sound of your system. So I suggest that you call them and ask for their advice.

Thanks ChrisSU… Maybe I will do that, but I have to try myself first. I think I have to come down, unstress, strip it, connect the system once more and begin to love it again

Yes Christopher,

But the goal is 272 555PSDR 250 DR with CDX2 XPSDR.

Not 272 XPSDR 250 DR with CDX2 555PSDR.

The 555PSDR will benefit preamp, streamer and CDX2 with XPSDR.

The XPSDR on 272 won’t benefit the streamer and preamp as much.

But the CDX2 may well sound better with 555DR PS direct. :100:

The issue is @Peter63 is getting no benefit at all. This seems little more than a diversion and to me the focus should be on setting up the main body of the system with careful cable dressing and set up.

Then, by all means experiment. But we are not at that stage yet are we?

Peter is disappointed with the sound and is worried about it not being right or some underlying issue with the kit.

Best to resolve that first surely? Then experiment with swapping the power supply and see how good the CDX2 can sound.

When I had a CDS3 I would swap in the 555PS to see how good it could sound. Then swap back into the NDS.

I just don’t want to divert too much and get to the bottom of why the system isn’t sounding right.

But yes, your points are valid and may even help to find out if there any issues with the new 555PSDR that Peter has purchased.

All valid points. All here to help. All unified in helping Peter get this right :+1:

Best wishes.

Yes, it’s new to Peter, but I think he said it was a couple of years old, so it must be either X demo or secondhand.

Just to clarify, what will be your final system?

CDX2 into XPS DR
Into 272 555PS DR into 250DR?

Or CDX2 into 272, 555PSDR into 250DR?

I understand that CDX2 can be converted into transport so could be used direct into your 272

I would put the 555psdr on the source - cdx2
Source first

Yes, it’s worth trying them both ways round.

As long as the changes are not made so fast that the user gets confused and finds it hard to judge which is the best sound quality.

And as long as the dealer who sold him the power supply doesn’t say that some arbitrary time limit has run out for returning it if the user doesn’t like it in the end.

you’ve had it running ‘four days now’; ermm(!!)…

My Nait integrated needed 80hours MINIMUM (to not be the worst sounding amp I’ve heard in nearly thirty years), and around 400 hours until listenable (closer to the capability of the NuVista M3 it replaces).

after 5-600 hours I’d relisten to what you have: should be a night/day difference.

My Nait integrated improved noticeably in yhe first 600 hours.
out of box was a ‘return to store’ sound quality…
Now? Naim convert…
(just needed some ‘ON’ time)

Yes, definitely needs to be left on while running in.

Sometimes demo units have been used not a great deal and are not fully run in when you get them – and this even applies to occasional secondhand units.

I once upgraded my 272 with an 1yo 555DR, following the general consensus here. The difference was massive (also had a non-Naim PS on the 272 at one point) from both bare and NNPS. However, after a while I exchanged it for an NDX2 for an even bigger lift in SQ, not to mention the added functionality.

Bottom line is, I don’t think a 272 is good enough to highlight the 555DRs potential, provided yours is 100% functional.

Hi JimDog. Yes 555 is new to me, and it is a demo produced in 2021, but it has not been played much.

Hi Dan
I believe that 272 is perfectly fine for playing with 555. Naim also recommends this combination. 272 may not be 252 quality, but it’s close. I did also have a non-Naim PS, but connected to my CDX2. Now the the XPS replaces it.

Sounds like you’ve answered your own question. 555 isn’t broken in yet.

Hi Dan, first thanks for you uplifting words…
You say: “Or CDX2 into 272, 555PSDR into 250DR?”… I’m confused. How can this be possible?
Yes my target is 555/272 then my CDX2/XPS connected to 272 which ultimately plays from the NAP250.
I consider my 272/555 as the main source. Some people think I should use the 555 with my CDX2 and connect my XPS to my 272. Well, then I’m almost back to my old setup. I don’t quite understand. I bought the 555 to give my preamplifier a boost to the overall sound. Does that sound completely wrong to you?

Hi David
What do you mean by source? 555/CDX2?
I realise that 555 is better than XPS, but if I do as you describe, I will return to my old setup which was XPS/272. 555 I bought to lift the whole system overall. I also play vinyl from “my source” 272/555…
It’s important to keep my tongue in my mouth now… do you think I’m doing something wrong here?
