Forgetting the vintage 22, 202 and FM2 valve kit … a nice way of keeping warm when on!
That will be a 200 series then ![]()
Funny how things go around in cycles.
It’s the when you need to rationalise, not the if ![]()
No only the 3 new units I was told by MM that changing just the Nova for 222 would be a big improvement and I got the impression that the 250dr would be very close to the new 250 I was just very impressed with all 3 and have given up hope of the supernova!
Thanks Richard. It’s a path of consideration here, but unsure if possible.
@110dB Any thoughts on if the new 250 can be run wonky with 250DR from a 242, or not?
[Edit]: Just wondering if the penny has now dropped from the other thread of Naim “discontinuing active”. I wonder if snaxo is not part of the new world, even in hybrid situations.
lol. I’m like you (and others) curious about the upgrade path from a SN3. Personally I’ve never been a fan of the second row of buttons on the Classic range preamps, so I’m waiting for hopefully a New Classic preamp. I’m in no hurry at all.
There’s enough compatibility and upgradability here to keep me going for years, I’m going to persuade my friendly dealer one quiet afternoon to wire up some suitable combos for comparative purposes, namely a SN3 as a preamp driving the new NAP 250, and the NPX 300 driving an NDX 2 as a source in to a naked SN3 and one driving a NAP 250 with the same two box source.
Oddly the thing I’m strugging with the most is cosmetic, which is the white ring on the volume knob.
Inevitably the (as yet announced) 200 Series NAC will just look like a NSC 222 without a front fascia display and some sort of physical button matrix, probably a horizontal row and using the same Uniti style buttons as they’ve utilised on the 222.
I’d be satisfied if like on my SN3 I can turn any lights off during use, the lowest brightness level may be all that’s possible, although fixable with a simple firmware update of course.
What could be interesting is a NAC that can power itself but optionally be upgraded with a NPX 300, priced around the £3-4K mark.
I look forward to hearing about this. I was thinking something similar but Steve Sells reported back that the NPX300 can’t be used with a nDAC so that changes my thinking some. Regardless my “lego” building will start with the New NAP250
I had a fairly limited listen last Friday and with £70K speakers but I got the sense the NAP 250 was the real performer of the 3 boxes hence me saying immediately at the time, it would be interesting to hear it in other systems.
I’m guessing for the time being it’ll be challenging hearing it in anything other than a 3 box 200 Series demo setup, every dealer out there is going to be upselling multibox deals like crazy for months, good as that is, it’s not for me despite its abilities and something I’ll take a much longer cycle to work out a path forwards on.
I’m encouraged my NDX 2 is shown some love with the new PS, I’ve been happy with that as a digital source and felt no burning need to ditch it for a 222.
I’ve also been wondering what the entry points could be for getting from old classic to new; the way things might be playing out is that the “blocks” now need to bigger to make the full leap e.g. if one has a 252/SC, well the whole lot has to go to get to new series. (Caveat: 500-series compatibility with lower series.)
And that’s where I thought/think the power amps could be strong stepping-stone contenders. The new 250 certainly, on paper at least, looks to be an interesting step up, for example. (If anything like the non-DR to DR uplift, then very interesting indeed.)
Is that a scratch on the Perspex front edge, center?
Or just a play of the light?

a challenger to your streamer may be waiting around the corner, in the meantime just enjoy the music…![]()
Indeed so, gets its daily workout regardless!
It’s not going anywhere for the foreseeable ![]()
Local dealer in Seattle will not be seeing new boxes until end of January, early February timeframe. I am looking forward to the demo to hear the system and compare to my current line up.
This ^
Stay away. I have dibs on their first NC250! But seriously. Unless you want to lower box count. I don’t see how the 222 will drastically improve what you have. The new NPX300 and 250 may be another story however
Basically Sound by any chance?
I may see you there…![]()
It will be interesting to hear the sound when they have a gathering at the store.
The attraction is a reduction in box count and if it sounds better then that would be bonus. Of course that all comes at a cost. …and you are correct with your comment/question regarding an improvement in performance over what I currently have. Replacing the current system would be at a steep price. If there are enough folks looking to trade in current systems the monies offered by dealers may drop through the floor.
Possible great news for people looking to upgrade to current gear. Anyway all speculation and it will be fun to hear the new system when available.
Perhaps we will run into each other up at the shop. Be on the lookout for the distinguished looking older gentleman with the white hair walking out with the NAIM NC NAP250 on his shoulder! …and perhaps with a NPX 300 power supply under the other arm with a Lead Assembly, Burndy, New Classic PS to Legacy Streamer hung around his neck. The NDX 2 with the 282 may be enough until the 300 series NSC becomes available!
Audio day dreaming…
