The Naim New Classic range - Part 1

Everyone loves beans on toast, just not every day.

Too bad it doesnā€™t work with the nDAC as Steve stated earlier. Not that there is anything wrong with the current XPS-Dr or 555PS

How have you been able to do a listening test?

Iā€™m retired now and have a medical background, however, I feel I would need an electronics degree to follow many of these posts!

My first Naim amplifier was back in the late 70ā€™s - in combination with Linn equipment. Over the years I have owned most of the different iterations of Naim amplifiers, CD players and streamers. Currently I have a 500 series combo and it is delightful! No doubt the R&D guys in Naim have pulled off another masterpiece, however, all the previous generations have merit. So old does not mean bad; currently Iā€™m looking to purchase a Citroen DS - just beautiful.

Let us all enjoy what we have and consider ourselves to be lucky!

I havenā€™t, I quoted an earlier post from poster 110db, who is Naimā€™s hardware technical director Steve Sells, who as well as lab listening tests has had the 200 range at home for 12 months during development (if I remember his earlier posts).

Congratulations on the new range Naim, love the revised look, more modern but still unmistakably Naim Classic. The thought thatā€™s gone into reducing box count and making upgrades more flexible will be appreciated by many I think, myself included.

Exciting to think of whatā€™s to come too!

Cheers,
Mark

Well the new series looks good though Jury may be out on the Perspex panel until real world use has been involved for a while. Personally I would wait for a dedicated preamp rather than combo amp/streamer. Price point for all three boxes currently does put it against steep competition though.
Am considering a demo of the three boxes against chord Ultima 3 pre/Chord Ultima6, Qutest DAC and ND5xs2 combo at similar money. Just wish Naim had launched dedicated preamp at same timeā€¦ā€¦

Will be an interesting back to back demo if I can get a dealer to arrange it.

Itā€™s the most ā€˜attractiveā€™ car imo. What a beauty.

Please do not worry about the DSP converting DSD to 705.6kHz. Our DSP engineers are fanatical and will not even convert from 44.1kHz to 48kHz; only integer over-sampling allowed.

We do down sample DSD to 705.6kHz but at the same time increase the bit depth from 1 bit to 40 bit floating point. Itā€™s then sent to the DAC chip.

Here is an example for entertainment purposes only:
It is a bit like having a swimming pool with (LxWxD) 100m x 10m x 1m, the volume of water (think digital information) is the same if the swimming pool is converted to 10m x 10m x 10m. However with 40 bit accuracy itā€™s like having it around 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000m deep. It can contain the same amount of water and more.

Most DACs do something to DSD and mostly for the greater good.

Iā€™d hazard a lot of ā€˜DACsā€™ that say DSD are in reality not ā€˜pureā€™ DSD.

ā€¦PS the phono stage in 222 is unique to 222.

Thatā€™s interesting, anything you can share on why it wasnā€™t the XS3/SN3 implementation?

SN3 phono stage runs from +24V, NSC 222 phono stage runs from +/-12V

Most systems are either source first biased or balanced evenly between source and amp.
The new classic 3 box looks amp heavy - is there any technical rationale to support this design decision?
I do like the new range and will be going to dealer to demo so I can decide for myself but thought Iā€™d raise as not sure if this has been discussed yet.
Many thanks in advance.

Iā€™d go and listen to it with an open mind and ideally with sensible speakers that youā€™re either familiar with or ar a similar price/performance bracket to what you are using in your current setup.
In my case I thought it would be good, I left feeling more impressed than I wanted to
be and frustrated I couldnā€™t afford any of it :relaxed:

Indeed v sensible advice.
Naim will always primarily be an amplification company to me but I do like their house sound and think (Iā€™ve no idea yet) this new combination will deliver that certain swagger.
Time will tell.

I was minded to do exactly that thinking how can naim improve the 250dr so had decided to change the nova for the NSC222 thinking it should offer an improved SQ without the NPX 300 that anyway could always be added at a later date.
I went for a listen at Music Matters Stratford Upon Avon last Thursday then again on Saturday and finally today when I decided to probably keep the Nova for another room Ordered the NSC 222 NPX300 and just because it completes the intended setup included the NAP250 the NAP250 probably being a vanity purchase. canā€™t wait to hear it at home on my own speakers that are Focal Kanta 2.
