The Naim New Classic range - Part 1

Tesla announce early and take deposits.
Seems to have worked out ok for them.

One of my other hobbies is photography, and all my kit is Olympus. They publish a roadmap of all the lenses that they currently have plus those in development. Which is very useful.

It might be deliberate, so that it makes contact after everything else is connected. I have seen this in other connectors in the past.

Although you’re not supposed to be connecting these link plugs when the device is powered.

It looks like a pin hasn’t seated correctly. If it’s not pushed fully home during assembly it can be pushed back out again when the plug is inserted into a socket. I would get it checked or replaced as Richard suggests.

It might be safer, if any other user has a quick look at theirs, I was already had it plugged in, before my first post about the no sound. Only unplugged to make sure there wasn’t any issue then noticed the one slightly pushed in pin.

I’m fairly sure I have read all these entries, but could have missed one.

The announcement is called the “New Classic”

We have Chrome Bumper, then Olive, then Classic (Black), and now “New Classic”. Presumably there is another more official name for the “New Classic” rather than “New Classic”? “New” can’t officially be part of the name, can it?

What happens when the next big change happens, does “New Classic” get renamed to “Old Classic”.

Perhaps it should be “Classic MKII”, or since the introduction of DR perhaps “Classic MKIII”, or “Classic Big knob”, or “Classic Valley”. Thankfully it’s not called the “Classic Focal”

My vote is Classic big knob

New Classic is on the packing boxes.

It just seems so short termed. Presumably the next change will be the “Even Newer New Classic”, then there wont be space on the box.

Presumably even New Improved flavours of tinned soup, drop the former wording eventually

Thanks Ryder… Going to ask my dealer to get me a new link cap. :joy:

Richard.Dane, I wonder if the gentlemen at naim will send me a new link cap?

If it’s faulty then I would guess that your dealer will sort it out for you with Naim.

It’s working now, I had to plug in and out the large link cap, so it appears that it works with the pin pushed in, but to be safe if anyone else has the same pushed in pin. Please let me know.

Thanks Richard.Dane

I remember it different.

We all knew it coming as Nait 5 and Nap 500 indicated olive was soon out.
Overnight the range suddenly were changed.
For me I didn’t like the then new black boxes.
I got used to it though.

Must say the new classic looks much better than leaked pictures.
Have yet to experience them in flesh.

How long do we call pence new pence…
Then refer to old pence…
then just p…

I had a very pleasant visit to my local Naim dealer on Saturday to listen to the new classic trio. #gullifordhifiexeter.

I had three demo systems:

New Classic 222, 300, 250.
NDX5 xs2, Supernait3.
NDX2, 282, 250dr.
(My home system is ND5 XS2, Supernait3, Focal Micro Utopia BEs)

All systems played through Graham LS6 speakers using qobuz and listening to Jerry Garcia & David Grissman playing the thrill is gone as my main comparator.

I had listened to Graham speakers before and they work well with Naim kit (in a similar way to Harbeth) and the match with each of the three systems here sounded musical and smile inducing. Each system’s amp seemed happy to pump out the required prat but in terms of grip, detail and clarity there were differences which I suspect are down to the respective sources and preamps.

The ndx2 282 250dr provided excellent grip along with layers of easy to follow well separated instrument and vocal detail. Of the three systems this one also had the most apparent bass and leading edge to guitar and piano sounds.

The ND5 sx2 SN3 provided fewer layers of detail compared to the NDX2 fronted system but you don’t hear what’s missing and the result is wonderfully easy separation and clarity. Oh and the grip and bass was much better resolved by the Grahams than with my Focals.

The 222 to me it had similar grip, bass and detail to the ND5 xs2 fronted system but with less separation and clarity.

For me the NDX2 fronted system sounded quite a step up on the other two and has convinced me that I need a home demo of the ndx2 in my system.

What was powering the 282?

I think a hicap

Your findings are interesting and I think as more people hear the “new classic” - I agree it’s a silly name as well as being an oxymoron - we’ll find - as with olive to black, there will be some who miss aspects of the “old classic” and others who are totally bowled over by the “new classic”.

My instinct from dipping in and out of this thread is that the biggest change is perhaps the power supply - and indeed environmental considerations (rightly) probably necessitated many of the changes.

It’s great to see such an interest in Naim’s new boxes and hopefully it bodes well for their longevity although I doubt I will be bothering them with anything but perhaps a service in the future.
