Also posts like this claiming they are useless on Naim products.
Is the above statement true of CB/Olive products?
Both the manual switched (32.5, 72 etc) and logic controlled relays (52,82,102) will have the input switching before the gain stages, so I wouldn’t bother with shorting plugs.
I’ve only got shorting plugs on the phono inputs on the NAIT 50 to stop the noise on that unused input. No issues with doing that and an approach recommended by its designer.
You’re not going to do any harm using them, just be careful you’re not shorting any outputs with the DIN shorties if used on in / out wired DIN sockets.
Hi James.
I’m using them on a Nait 2. No mention of one above.
Neil
On the NAIT 2, input selection is at the selector switch so you’ve got PCB tracks running from the sockets at the back of the amp to the switch at the front so they could be beneficial here. You’re not going to do any harm either way, but just be careful that the DIN shorties on the Tape DIN socket (if you have one here) are not shorting the output pins on to ground.
The little NAIT 50 continues to impress. It’s got a few more miles under its belt since I last used it in my main system and it’s now really showing what it can do. Yes, the 350s hit harder, are more transparent and can really drive the 606s, but this little amp does all the musically important things just perfectly. It’s just very enjoyable to listen to.
Downsides…the bloody bright white led does grate a bit at night in our dimly lit lounge, and having to get up to adjust the volume.
First world problems…
Glad you are enjoying it … yes the N50 excels on its transparency… I guess some of the benefits of non automation and lower electronic noise profile etc. however yes it’s limited to 200 plus Watts on impedance dips for very short periods of time so one has to be realistic on total power on less sensitive speakers.
I am loving mine still a year on… it still surprises me with its transparency and insight… it’s the very natural un etched or non-forced sound that is just so gorgeous to listen to…
BTW not entirely sure, but I think my white LED may have faded a little over the past year and a bit…
I find that a semi-transparent earbud takes the edge of the glare. (Following a tip earlier in the thread)
A sealed BNIB example was just sold by a well known Chester based retailer on eBay for £1,350. That’s half the original retail price. Someone got lucky!
The Russ Andrews Shorties just do the inputs James. ![]()
Indeed. It’s a shame that this little amp looks poor value for money on the feature front compared to the competition and so probably gets overlooked. Seems to be quite a few still for sale, but at these prices, an absolute steal.
Money is a little tight at the moment and I was hoping to have a few recommendations of what speakers I should be looking at below £1000 to partner this amplifier?. I like ATC speakers and was considering the 7s as they can be had well below this figure used but would like some speakers that can be close to the wall due to having this amplifier in my old bedroom at parents when I stay there. Maybe some Proacs
Would suffice?. I did check the link mentioned earlier but all those speakers are either current models or quite expensive used ie, Tablette 10. Thanks
What about Neat SX3? Available for lesss than £1000 now.
My ATC 7’s sit 14cm from back wall to rear of speakers and they work great if it’s any help @Minuno
What about the previous Studio 100 or Studio 110 series.?
They have a good efficiency, front ported and good dimensions (stand mount), sound much better than their s/h value indicate.
The ATC7 can be a pig to drive.
I used to have a pair of later Studio 100s on the big concrete filled Target R stands. They worked well playing mostly classical records on the end of a set of big EL34 power amps but I was never that convinced by them with Naim and on more up beat music. I remember trying some Allaes in their place and finding the latter so much more fun to listen to.
I have been told the ATC7 and NAIT 50 a divine combo…
On my radar to replace OPTICONS in my home office…
Blackstar, I’d love your opinion of N50 and SCM7
The ATC7 can be very nice if driven properly in smaller rooms near wall.
IIRC there’s three editions, the first one with a crazy sensitivity to avoid (for a little amp).
