Thought so. The lady behind you is carrying a Canon EOS 50e 35mm…
That’s quite surprising really.
We went on two safaris, in April 2004, and October 2005.
On the first, there was one dSLR, a Nikon D40? and it wasn’t mine, I was still on 35mm with everyone else.
18 months later, nobody was using 35mm. That’s one incredibly rapid take-up, once the affordable dSLR had appeared.
Ah, but they didn’t have eye controlled focus, a key feature of the 50e!
And you could still buy, process and develop a 36 shot film for about £15…
I had the eye controlled focus on my EOS 30… it was ‘ok’ ish, but my new camera’s eye control leaves it standing.
£15 was ok I suppose, but I took over 800 photos on that first safari, mostly not worth looking at again. Good for memories, that’s about it.
An R3?
Yes
Out of interest, how much does it weigh?
Comes in at 850 grams without a lens, so over a kilo with a typical optic.
Just prefer film, I have digital too, but it doesn’t feel like photography
Thanks. I think my first Canon SLR was 900g all-in. I bought it after someone I knew had a Nikon outfit that was quite hefty. The thing is, you could really feel the quality difference as you handled them and since that Nikon outfit cost 6x as much, the Nikon lenses were obviously better when you looked at the images.
I hardly ever use an SLR these days. I used to use it all the time. It was often in the car with me.
I was brought up on colour transparencies though my father preferred b+w. I have my father’s Voigtlaender outfit from (guessing here) the early 60s. Mint with a full suite of lenses, a separate light meter, flash etc. it used to be worth a fortune perhaps 40+ years back but today I suspect it’s sentimental value only.
Technology marches on though and I remember dad borrowing an Asahi Pentax in the 70s - he never looked back.
Today, I use an iPhone 14, distribute the image in minutes and then it’s forgotten. Yet in contrast I still prefer a proper hifi system to iTunes and earphones and if I’m honest, prefer vinyl to CD and CD to streaming. Perhaps I’ll return to photography in retirement!
Interesting, I’m semi retired and now have the time to play with film. I have all the classic Nikons from F1 to F4. I have found a great place where I can take films to be really well processed. A day later I get an email with the images and I can collect the prints later.
I have noticed a massive increase in film camera values though. A shop nearby is selling a humble Olympus Trip for £119!!
It’d be great to see a photo of the tractor
I was sitting outside my local with a visitor from South Africa and he’d just commented how rural it was (in a good way) when a dozen or so vintage tractors just like these turned up, some with one person, others two and a couple with trailers.
“Just a normal Tuesday!”, I said.
Hopefully seeing the Electra at Duxford tomorrow. It’s just a beautiful looking aircraft.
I’m there myself!
