Q sound or a version of it ,
Nice effect but sometimes overdone ,
Roger got it about right on this album ![]()
Thanks for signposting this - great background to the snooker as I had my lunch.
A few years ago sound engineer supreme Steve Hoffman suggested listening to the Kinks Waterloo Sunset - IT MUST BE THE STEREO VERSION for speaker positioning.
Steve says - "The recording was done in dub down process, bouncing from one machine to another to add the background vocals. Somehow they goofed and they ended up out of phase (or was it intentional).
The background voices are floating and should seem to be way the hell to the sides, around you you, almost surrounding you. Can you hear it?"
I did locate the stereo version of the song, and never could hear this - Steve suggests moving speakers away from the wall and toeing in until you hear it.
Along with the tracks mentioned in this thread I am going to give this another go.
I had fun trying that awhile ago when I read the Hoffman thread.
Seemed to work.
It must be my cloth ears. I am going to give it another try.
Note my ‘seemed’…never got that almost-wraparound effect that Hoffman talked of.
Stop Press just listened to the track on youtube and there is certainly something ethereal about the backing vocals.
Ain’t no sunshine. (Auralic stream, 552, 300DR, D9.2)
Just listening to this track. Hairs raised, stunning clarity on the voice, deep controlled bass and piano( electric?) placement perfect.

Try
“I never learnt to share” or the album James Blake.
Phil
Yes. I do that with Tidal.
Hi Andy, I remember seeing the same quote a few years back and gave it a try. I could definitely hears the backing vocals away to my left, well in front of the rest of the sound stage, Spooky. This is the album I tried the experiment with
“Audio Lounge Leicester” comes up in all my Qobuz apps. I wonder if copyright/licensing keeps it out of certain markets.
I don’t agree with you. If you use the Naim app you find at the bottom the playlists, with this one on top.
What about the guitar coming to you from the left on the Dire Straits album Live at the BBC (My favorite Dire Straits Album). Listen e.g. to Wild West End Open Qobuz. The sound quality on the compilation album Live 1978-1992 is in my opinion better than on the original.
Thanks for mentioning this album, it’s been a long time since I’ve listened to it and never on a decent system which was a whole different experience. Overall I think it’s excellent and well produced. In the recording I listened to the “yeah” was more central but very distant and focused.
Phew glad you said that ‘cause that is exactly how I hear it.
Same here.
Are there any users, who are listening to music, which is from the years after 2020? Please try this: https://youtu.be/ImllpvDwbQ8?si=6aMopwMNi3ngYbvo. Tom Misch & yusef dayes: Nightrider
I did the search on the main page of the Naim app and found it.
