Phil Cool’s live show was exactly the same as the TV show, so it was nothing new, just dead boring. Whereas other comedians had essentially different material (but raunchier), making it entertaining and interesting.
I think a lot of comedians had two personas, a TV version and a live version. It was when the two combined, problems occurred.
Don’t go to comedy shows now, but concentrate on live jazz.
No chance of me remembering where I read it, but I recall reading of someone going to two George Melly shows at different venues, the first of which was uproariously and outrageously funny (including at least one routine I probably couldn’t even describe euphemistically on here without causing an outbreak of pearl-clutching) and the second of which was sedate, polite and generally a huge disappointment to the person concerned who wanted to see more like the first gig. Then, remembering the vast difference in the nature of the audiences at the two shows, he realised that, actually, Melly was just being a thoughtful performer and tailoring his act to the audience.
Probably unintentional on your behalf but reference to Pearl clutching & M Whitehouse (in the original joke thread) , and the generally misogynistic content of blue jokes related by men (generally) is what I find distasteful. To be honest, I never found Jo Brand’s blue humour engaging either.
Probably, Oscar Wilde had some searing and witty observations on humour. Swiss Toni & the 13 Earl of Wybourne probably best portray the characterisation I have in mind.
I am not & never have been a prude.
I may be misreading what you’ve written, but I genuinely cannot understand why one might find references to pearl clutching or Mary Whitehouse distasteful.
Unless there’s a couple of entries on Urban Dictionary that have comprehensively passed me by…
I give up trying to defend my argument that most male originated & male repeated blue humour would better be posted in its own thread where those who appreciate this material can post away to their heart’s content. There’s then little risk of offending other members who don’t find blue jokes amusing. It could called the Chubby Brown Memorial thread.
Who clutches at pearls, I wonder? Who was Mary Whitehouse (whose views I opposed)?
Not one individual - usually the lines are societal and draw on many factors & influences.
I’d hate to generalise but I summise that the membership of this site is older white middle-classish who matured during the time when such blue material & attitudes were commonplace (in the pub, the daily press, the music hall, etc).
Of course, posters could also exercise their own judgement on where to draw the line. Most do as Regards politics, etc., so why not here?
