Tonearms and plinth ideas

Hi all,

i have a project which is going to take some time (and money I suspect). I have come by a technics SP-10r.

so I need a plinth and tonearm.

Plinth:

I really like the look of the SH-10b3 even tho’ it’s old, difficult to find in good condition and likely bettered by other more modern plinths (accoustand and the elusive Carl Ellis plinths)

Does anyone have one and can give me some tips on sourcing and/or what to look out for?

Tonearm.

from what I’ve read Some 9 inches will work (smes 309/iv/v do not seem to) but I’m after a 10 inch which to me sort of look right.

Obvious contenders

Eps-100 (old and like hens teeth)

Sme 3010r -I know little of these

Fr64s-look great, but not sure about cartridge range

Glanz 1000s (v pricey likely outside budget

Glanz mh-10bt

Anyway any ideas welcome please. I’m a little out of my depth!!

I’m not sure whether the recent SP-10R will fit the old Technics obsidian plinth. Either way, many reckoned that the alternatives could be a better bet performance-wise.

If it were me I would be looking at a custom slate or constrained layer plinth.

Tonearm-wise, I’d be tempted to try it with a 12" arm; perhaps one from SME or, something like a Thomas Schick (especially as it would be a great partner for my SPU Royal G-Body).

Thanks Richard, by all accounts they fit as far as I can tell (the sh-10b3, b5 snd b7). Custom plinths-no idea what I’m looking for.

schick yes-that’s a good shout-something I will look at (they do a 9.5 inch which also may work).

A Denon Da 309 or 307.

I believe these where designed in collaboration with NHK for professional broadcasting. Used on Denon direct drive, so probably ideal for a Technics.

Did you actually confirm that the deck was arriving without tonearm and plinth?

I’ve got it!
