Transfer from HDX to iPhone

No, but I will after breakfast.

I’m almost regretting my purchase today :face_with_symbols_over_mouth::rage::cry:

Keep the faith!

David, just a quick ‘holding’ note of thanks - I used an old back up from the HDX so 90% done but I’ll load the rest by hand, like you say I may have a slightly faulty HDX disc. I’ve still got a few bits and bobs to ask you about but until then CHEERS !

David, apologies for monopolising your time and I’m happy to offer this up to the wider group as a whole but has anyone experienced music just ‘disappearing’ overnight from a new Naim Uniti Core ??? Everything was going OK yesterday, music playing fine. This morning when I tried to play music from albums, artists, whatever it just says ‘no results’. I’ve just checked on a network radio player which can access the Core and it too says ‘Empty’, it’s like all of the music has just disappeared overnight ?

The last album I played yesterday was still showing this morning when I looked at the screen of the NDX2 (Core playing through NDX2), I pressed play and the album started from the beginning. This was after finding ‘no results’ on the Core. Does this mean the NDX holds a cache of last album played or is the music still there on the Core but I just can’t see it for some reason ?

The last thing I did yesterday evening was to format a USB stick in the front socket of the Core and that was it until this morning. It’s obviously possible that I formatted the Core hard drive by mistake but I don’t think so as it said “Format; Mac or PC” which I didn’t think one needs to specify with the Core or at least I haven’t encountered that question yet, the formatting took about five seconds which I imagine would have taken longer with a 2TB store. Also The USB stick I formatted last night I stuck it in my PC just now, it was newly labelled NAIM_4 something or other but after a few moments the PC said “F is not accessible” and “File or directory is corrupted or unreadable”. Would it have been renamed by the Core with a Naim prefix if I had made a mistake?

Weirdly when I look at my network on File explorer on my PC and I click on the NDX it’s produces a page which gives me some Naim details of the machine, when I click on the Core I just get a blank Naim page. Something seems to be not quite right - I can readily accept I managed to format the whole Core by mistake but all does not seem right.

The SSD is brand new, no recent power cuts (we have to re-set security cameras so we know if that had happened), and the firmware is up to date.

Just one more point to add - just checked in Music Stores on Core and it’s showing 0.57TB of storage currently being used . If I’d accidentally reformatted the SSD in the core rather than the USB stick surely this would say 0TB used ?

I don’t think you could accidentally format your SSD. But what you might have done is make your USB stick your active Music Store. As there is no music on it yet, that’s why you can’t find any! You can change that by going into Manage Music in the Core setup and make sure that the active Music Store is the one inside the Core. It’s all self explanatory. You can only have one active Music Store at any one time.

What were you trying to do with the external USB stick? Presumably you were going to use it for a backup? If so, then after formatting it, you should kick off the backup process in the Core settings again.

That sounds quite encouraging, but let me answer your questions,

OK, tell me where I’m going wrong

  1. System settings
  2. Manage music
  3. Configure Music stores

Options:

a) Configure music store (only one appears, internal SSD, click on it and it ask me if I want to delete music (I do not, other than that no action possible from here)

b) View local drives (again shows internal SSD, no action possible from here either)

c) View network drives - ‘no drives found’

So I ‘think’ I’ve selected the internal SSD as my store ??!?

(What I was wanting to do with the USB (apart from now hurling it through the window) was to see if I could move any music from the Core onto it to use elsewhere, you’re going to tell me that’s not how it works …… :face_with_peeking_eye:)

Ok yes you did and that should be ok then. At the bottom of the screen for the internal SSD there is a link which says “do not use this music store” which allows you to use another one that you have configured or are about to configure. But you don’t want to touch that.

I suggest you unplug your USB stick, shut down the Core, take the power off for half a minute and then put it on again. It should now start up and hopefully your music will reappear. It may rebuild the music database itself which will mean a few minutes wait as it does so.

If it doesn’t then I would suggest telling it to Rebuild the Music Database from the app. This takes a few minutes as I say but you should see the music appearing in the app again quite soon.

You can export music from the Core onto a USB stick using the Backup Music option in the app. The other way to do it is to look at the Core on your network and then you can copy folders in the Core and paste them into a USB stick plugged into your PC. This is the option I prefer because you can copy just what you want, whereas with Backup Music you get the whole lot.

In any case you should keep a full backup somewhere of course!

I read some of your older replies to other people’s postings this morning and I did the reboot then as you’d suggested to them (power off, press button, flashing light above USB port etc) and it’s still not showing any music so now I’ll ask it to rebuild the database itself …… here goes, fingers crossed

Pressed ‘reset’ ……… no discernible action taking place ……. nothing saying “OK, I’ll do that for you” which I find a bit concerning but as it says it may take a while … I’ll check later, but thanks for your guidance thus far David

Richard

So this is not “Reset app” you are doing? That probably won’t help.

It’s “Rebuild Music Database” which is in “Manage Music” in the app.

Yep, Rebuild Music Database in Music Server and Local Music section. Nothing seemed to be happening when I pressed Reset

If it’s going to work then you should see some albums in the app now…

If it doesn’t work then my next suggestion is to go back to Manage Music and then tell it not to use the internal disc as the Music Store, then do a power off restart of the Core again and tell it to use the internal hard disc as the Music Store.

If that doesn’t work then I think do a factory reset of the Core and when it has restarted, it may ask you if it can use the Music Store it has found or alternatively you may have to go into Manage Music and tell it to use the internal disc as Music Store but don’t agree to format it of course or you will have to start ripping music all over again.

No, nothing at all.

Sounds a bit alarming

I must say I always do this stuff in the Core home page in the app, rather than via servers and local music in the streamer page in the app…

David, I’ll paste in some images over the weekend to show you where I’m at, but I’m thinking this unit has to go back to Naim via the retailer ?

Maybe. Anyway I’ll keep trying to help.

David, just thought I’d tell you what’s been happening since my problem occurred - I’ve been in an email exchange with the Naim tech wizards (Duncan specifically), I sent him some screen shots of what I could see on the Core via the app and I really don’t understand why the music has come back but it has and everything in my HiFi world is SO much more rosey now. I have literally been not sleeping through worry that I may have bought a dud example. Will the music disappear again, who knows but I’m never going near it with a USB stick again !

I’m going to stop pestering you now, well for a few weeks anyway - I need to get a back up done with my replacement drives in my Synology NAS when they arrive and then when all is calm I can start to address the other few questions I’ve got. Until then, many many thanks

Richard

Hi Richard

I’m glad you got it working. I do backups to a USB drive and it works fine, so you shouldn’t be afraid of them. But I can understand why you are a bit risk averse now!

Anyway I’m happy to advise any time at all. Don’t worry about asking for help if you think I can provide it. Anyway enjoy the music!

Best

David

Hi David, hello.

After a holiday, and learning to love my Core without provoking it, I’m trying to do a new backup. My Synology NAS told me one of my HDDs was ‘degraded’’ after doing my initial backup so after much faffing with Amazon I have a new ‘Barracuda’ HDD installed in my NAS. Is there any reason why my Diskstation cannot be seen by the app ? I do the settings>manage music>backup music>configure new backup (as no device is currently configured), and the only device shown in network drives is my old laptop - when I turn that off no network drives are shown. I must be missing something fundamental, like my NAS not being configured, but how can I configure something I cannot see ?:cry::rage:

I can’t really help with this as I never bothered to configure my NAS for backup. But the advice that @S.C gave you in your other thread seems right to me. Good luck!
