Tuner/streamer advice please

Good evening,

I’m looking to get a tuner/streamer. My set up is:- Naim supernait 1, Naim CD5 cd player, Dali epicon 2 speakers with TQ ultra black 2 speaker cables. I’m happy with the sound although I am going to get a super cap. I would like to be able to listen to both fm radio and dab radio along with being able to stream music via Apple or Spotify etc. what would you recommend as a ‘radio and streamer’ please? Having the option of fm radio is important so I can listen to local footy! Thank you.

What do you intend doing with the suoercap you have mentioned getting?

Hi, is your local footie station not available as an internet radio station? If so you might not need an FM tuner, and internet radio has improved enormously over the last few years, and most streamers will support it.

You need something like this!

What’s the Supercap for?

Presumably the Supernait.

With internet radio available, and Naim’s recent brilliant implementation of it, I really can’t understand why anyone would use DAB radio plus or not.

FM is a whole different matter, and from experience I know you can be very happy with a Naim NAT05, which can be found easily and cheaply.

Default pointer for a streamer for that internet radio, streaming services and local files, is the ND5-XS2 (not the original one), which has only recently been discontinued and is excellent VFM preloved.

So a NAT05 for Halloween and a ND5-XS2 for Christmas and you’re all set! As others I’m very curious about the SuperCap plan.

Thanks. I’ll have a look at those. It’s actually a non-Naim PS for supernait and cd5 is the plan. I’m in the northeast and follow Sunderland footy and radio Newcastle either feature Sunderland or Newcastle on dab or fm depending on who is playing at home.

Thanks again. Andy

Newcastle available on Naim Radio

If you’re looking for a low budget quick fix for all of your described requirements you can also get one of the budget streamers (WiiM, Bluesound, Cambridge, Eversolo) and run it through the DAC of your Supernait 1.

ps: Note that a SN1 may be approaching the service interval age now or soon.

Bit punchy on a Supernait?

I’ll have to check that out but if so that will make things easier- cheers

Cheers- problem is that they cover both Sunderland and Newcastle. You have to switch between fm or dab depending on who is playing at home. So don’t know if internet radio would cover both or just whoever is away that week. I’ll check it out though- cheers

Nice one - I’ll check that out and hopefully naim still servicing as last time I asked they did not seem too keen(about 5!years ago.

Not at all. It’s waste of regulators but certainly the best ps for a SN. I think @Bart from this forum ran an Nds into a super capped sn for years but I might remember the wrong person.

I put my SCdr onto my 72 because I could ( when the 252 went for service), and very nice it was too. But, I’d not choose to design my set up like that.

Was the scap appreciably better than a hicap on your 72?

It was, but I put it down to the dr regulators rather than anything else. I had previously run the 72 with a HCdr.

Typically a HC has a single 500va transformer and 2 big caps, then either 2 traditional regualtors or 2 dr. A SC has a single 500va transformer and 2 big caps then either lots of traditional regulators or lots of dr.

And somehow people find sonics benefits to the SC over the HC, confirmation bias plays a bigger role than we care to admit.

With my 282 I did the whole one hcdr, two hcdr and scdr. I peaked at 2 hcdr.

As I always said, a scdr only takes you to a 252. Only buy a SCdr if you want to end up there. Otherwise 2 HCs is where it’s at.
