Turntable connections

Asking for advice for best way to connect Turntable through Naim NAC-N 272 preamp streamer to integrated Luxman amplifier without using the amp phono sockets.
Recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

Can I ask why you want to connect to the 272 rather than connect to the phono input on the Luxman ?

A bit more info would help forum members answer your question - Do you have a phono stage, either built into the turntable or a separate one ? What Turntable do you have ?

Yes I could, but heard that connecting turntable through separate preamp (and then go to amp) will increase the sound quality. The turntable is Rega Planar 3 & does not have a phono stage.

How are you connecting the 272 to the Luxman?

I suspect you’ve heard “separate phono pre amp”, which is another name for phono stage.

It looks like the Luxman already has a decent MM/MC phono stage built in, so I would just use that with the Rega.

Yes, I am.

RCA cables from Naim N 272 to Luxmans line #1.

Is that from the 272 line out sockets, and using the preamp and volume control of the Luxman?

Yes, it is from the 272 “analogue outputs”
(The turntable is not connected yet)

Both the Luxman and Naim volumes can be used at present

Just connect the rega to the luxman direct, as it has its own phono stage built in.

Otherwise you need to buy a phono stage, connect rega to the phono stage, connect phono stage to 272, connect 272 to luxman. Which cannot be beneficial.

Another thing to consider.

If the phono pre amp you buy is lower or same quality as the phono stage in the Luxman, you will be wasting your money.

That makes no sense.

Having 2 preamps in series will result in lower quality than using the line out from the 272 and taking that to the Luxman Line In. This will bypass the 272 preamp and volume control.

I think he’s confusing a pre amp with a phono pre amp.

None of this makes sense, but if I understand correctly the motivation is the use the power amp section of the Luxman for the 272 pre. Thus, the 272 pre-out should connect to the Luxman power amp input (if it has one). If it’s desired to also use the Luxman phono-stage, then can one connect the turntable to it and then use a tape-out from the Luxman to a line in on the 272. That would bypass the Luxman volume control and use the 272 for that.

If the Luxman doesn’t have a pre-out/pwr-in jumper on the back maybe all this is moot, and I’m just in one of my nonsensical old man dreams after consuming one more IPA than I should.

You can’t do this; use the luxman as a phono preamp, take the output back to the 272, and then feed the 272 output back to the luxman.

Rega > luxman = done

By all means use the 272 as a streamer source into the luxman, but don’t use it as a preamp into the luxman.

As others have said it makes no sense.

Luxman amps have truly first rate phono stages as far as built-in ones go. I suspect you may have got wires crossed with the fact that you can get better results if you connect a turntable to an amp using a dedicated external “phono” preamplifier. Which is completely unrelated to the 272.

And the Luxman 590 phono stage is really good. Well beyond the level of the NAD turntable.

His motivation is

It is very likely that he has heard that connecting turntable through separate PHONO preamp (and then go to amp) will increase the sound quality. Phono pre amp, being another name for a phono stage.

He’s confused regarding the difference between a phono pre amp and a pre amp with a phono stage.

And, I can understand why. :grinning:

Just connect the turntable to the Luxman phono input - simples, job done.

Otherwise, if you think spending a shed load of money on a dedicated phonostage will better the Luxman in-built one, then crack on.
