Turntable to NAC-N 272

just purchased a Technics SL-1500C connected to analogue inputs but no sound

Turntable less than 1 week old and already the auto lift at the record end, worked but left the arm raised. Since fixed accept it seems like a fault. Result for now

I will probably stop using autolift switchable. and just put stylus on and off at the end. not a great start, now wondering if I have sound coming out of the turntable, onboard phono amp. Assuming that is working. are the standard analogue settings OK for turntables please?

Thanks and Regards R

What input do you have the TT connected to. Input 1 is the DIN5 socket. 2 and 3 are the RCA inputs.

Not familiar with 272 but if ‘AV Fixed Volume: Yes’ does what I think it does that will be very loud…

it is connected to 2 or 3.

You need to make sure the input the TT is connected to (2 or 3) is enabled.

I have sound coming from A3 but it is low audio, had to turn volume up a lot. normal listening is at 22 to 30 and with this it is 44 and not especially loud

Have you got the interconnect connected to the correct output on turntable.

Connect to line out and switch the output to on.

You could try increasing the input trim.

It’s not unusual for a turntable to have a lower level input than digital sources, and a lot will depend on the cartridge and phono amp you are using. As HH says above, input trim adjustment on the 272 input you are using can help.

Quick google shows that the 2M (5.5mV) with internal phono (37dB gain) outputs 389mV, quite low in general terms. So you will need to crank volume up.

Compare this to modern digital components like CD players where line level can reach 2V.

Completely normal. On our 252 the volume gets up to 12o’clock with Stageline, which would blow speakers if input was switched to nDAC (where 9 is loud).

We used a Rega Fono (41.4dB gain) with 272 and it did need cranked up a little (and that was with an Elys 2 which has a higher output at ~7mV, so line level around 822mV).

I much appreciate the detail of what I have.

Just to confirm, I upgraded the cartridge to Concorde Music Red. though the output is similar.

I am using sources, UPnP, internet radio, and some Spotify. The turntable is to remove streaming. but at the volume level it won’t cut it. Just too low. Unless I get a more powerful amp. There was I thinking I had plenty of power!

I don’t quite have earth sorted yet. as I am working to get a connection on the NAC-N and yes I saw to use the red RCA but that doesn’t seem easy since the spade terminal doesn’t seem to work with the plug . I am hoping to work out what the screws are on a couple of not in use sockets. but don’t seem to have the right driver size, I think it is small torx, does that make sense please?

Integrated phono stage?

It’s not defeated (turned off) is it?

Like I said, try adjusting the input trim.

I didn’t know the 272 had an inbuilt cartridge preamplifier. My 172 doesn’t and I had to use an external one.

It doesn’t. The Technics has an inbuilt phono stage so you can plug it into a standard line input.

It also has an output that doesn’t go through the the inbuilt phono stage.

OP hasn’t confirmed that he is using the correct output and switched it on.
(line output).

I really wouldn’t be undoing ANY screws on the back of your 272……. you have no idea what they’re fastened to on the inside, might even be something important :scream:.

Great to see this this morning, thanks. Note of decisions and reasons previously taken made, inc earth not needed!

Input trim has indeed made the difference I was hoping to achieve. Thanks @HungryHalibut now at 3

That’s great, I’m glad it’s all worked for you.

It is strange to me, I played a couple of records (albums) I had not played for years earlier and I enjoyed them and heard nothing to be concerned about. I think trim level was at 10 or I changed to AV I didn’t notice thinness then

I did make a mistake earlier when switching with high volume, but I don’t think any damage was done. It just sounded loud as I rapidly lowered the volume. Since UPnP sounds great still just the vinyl may have gone off. or was it simply relatively unfamiliar with other music that

I just listened to a few songs I play a lot , on vinyl, for clarity I will state that it was Babe I’m gonna leave you. LedZepp1 and I realise now, that it sounds thin, or lacking bass. my comparison is to a UPnP version, played at normal volume. I have tried both and I think trim level was at 3

One thing does make me ponder about the deck and that is back in the early 80’s I have a Dual CS 505 turntable or something like that, it probably cost about £100 or thereabouts. and I had then I Nytech pre and power amp. volume was no problem at all.

I wonder if the Trim level is just volume control . or I changed to AV but these Favourite songs sound thin without a doubt. Since I never expected to use such high volume. I never planned to over 12 O’clock so to speak.
