My new Uniti Atom, I have a SONY Bravia XTR tv about 2 years old. TV’s set to PCM, tried multiple HDMI cables and… nothing, no signal. What am I missing here? Worked great with my WiiM, got the optical working. HDMI is one of the reasons I bought this unit. Suggestions?
HDMI can be a minefield. I gave up on it after finding that it often stopped working when my TV got an automatic firmware update. I use optical or Bluetooth for reliability.
Also, check that the output is from an HDMI ARC port, not just regular HDMI.
When i connected my Atom to a samsung TV recently by HDMI ARC, it was initially very flaky.
I replaced the standard HDMI cable that i was initially using with a new “8K” cable from amazon, and all has been well ever since.
This cable:
So not some fancy expensive cable, might be worth a shot.
It even powers up the atom when i turn the TV on.
ordered one, should be here today, thanks
With a recent TV, make sure it’s set to use ARC. Not eARC. And only stereo (PCM).
Though usually ARC/multi-channel connects with the Unitis but produces only noise.
set to PCM no option on TV for ARC or eARC, the output is HDMI 3 (eARC/ARC) in settings. And….no signal
I’ve never had an issue with any Sony TV and HDMI to an AV processor. But in the two locations where they connect to 2 channel setups, I chose optical LPCM. Although I like being able to control the AV volume from the TV remote over HDMI, for the stereo systems, I prefer the galvanic isolation that optical provides between a device with a dirty ground plane (TV) and the hifi.
In the kitchen I just pair the Sony TV to the streamer via Bluetooth.
So if you cannot get HDMI working, I’d consider optical or even Bluetooth. Uniti stuff all works well as a Bluetooth audio device from laptop or TV. Not strictly hifi but definitely good enough.
Yes, using optical, it works. My $600 WiiM HDMI worked fine with same TV. For $5000 everything should work, loving my Naim besides that.
Oh I agree. For me, regardless of functionality though it’s about keeping the TV electrically isolated from the stereo hifi. That’s the reason I don’t use HDMI other than the AV system. If I did want to connect the TV to a Uniti via HDMI, and it didn’t work where other things did, I’d be more than a little miffed.
For me the main reason to abandon HDMI was its unreliability, but also the fact that my Atom had a meltdown when connected to the TV. There was a rather disturbing electrical fizzing sound, and the screen was covered in brown horizontal lines.
I assumed I would have to get the Atom repaired, but fortunately it was fine after a restart. That did make me switch to Toslink though, and now I just use Bluetooth instead. The implementation isn’t as good as HDMI ought to be, but it works.
Yes, with the exception that you still need two remote controls, Toslink is fine.
Though I use a learning remote on those systems and just tell it that everything except volume buttons controls a Sony TV so functionally it’s rigged to work the same as HDMI with CEC from the end user’s perspective. Learning remotes are a bit old school and clunky but one big ugly remote is still better than two small sleek remotes.
Let me offer a slightly less pessimistic perspective …
I’ve been using my Atom-based system for TV sound for three years now, and most of the time it works fine. LG C2 into Atom via HDMI-Arc. Volume adjustment via TV remote.
It falls over maybe once a month, but reseting both devices to arc fixes it.
Jim.
Well thanks to the good folks at Focal/Naim, my HDMI is working!! Some detailed instructions, with pics of my Sony tv! and all is well. Great service, thank you Jimmy R.

What was the solution for reference?
not sure, there was a lot of steps. Updated software on tv, unplugging power on both. Power up tv, then Atom, then HDMI. If you really want to know I can forward you email.
