Uniti Nova issue, or not?

I have owned a Uniti Nova for maybe 6 months. I am very pleased with it.

I have noticed however that occasionally (certainly after a software update and sometimes after an update to the app) it becomes unresponsive until I switch it off at the mains, remove the plug for a period and then switch it back on.

Sometimes it will not switch on/off even using the switch on the front of the unit.

Does anyone know if this is normal or is it something I should get my dealer to look at?

I think there was a thread with people saying that their systems sounded “different” after a software update. Software updates often need time to settle and fully integrate into the system after being installed. Just give it time.

On my NDX2 there is an option to “Stay Connected” or similar. I wonder if yours is losing a connection somewhere and it may be worth looking for a similar setting on your Nova?

Stay connected simply prevents your phone from going to sleep when the Naim app is open so that you can use it without having to wake up the phone. It doesn’t change anything on the streamer.

I always thought it was for the streamer. You live & learn.

I appreciate it’s not very helpful simply to say "mine doesn’t do that” but it is true! I’ve had a Nova since it first came out and do not experience what you mention. Sorry not to be more helpful, though.

That doesn’t sound quite right. Not noticed that with mine which I got on releaase. I’ve noticed a couple of times recently the power button seems to have more play than it used to - maybe it’s me but I nearly got it stuck ‘in’ the other day.

If you find the app won’t control it, try restarting your router as if it then works it would suggest networking vagaries. If on ethernet check the cable connections are good. If it’s not network related then I’d say I can’t honestly recall mine being unresponsive.

Also, the decoupled IEC socket is quite stiff on connection so easy not to push the plug fully home for fear of being too rough with it - once had a recurrent display corruption issues which was due to the plug not being fully inserted.

Experiencing problems is no fun. Two Novas here without issue - on two different f’ware versions.
However, in order to provide meaningful responses, the following would be extremely useful.

  • Is the item brand new, or new to you, in either case, have you performed a total factory reset?
  • What version firmware is installed - the ‘latest’ is unfortunately not a version number?
  • How is the unit connected to your router - wifi or ethernet?
  • Which control point are you using, android or apple?
  • Is this new behaviour?

My Nova is getting unresponsive from time to time. Maybe once a month. Last time using it as a Roon Endpoint. Suddenly it stopped playing. A restart by pressing the on/off button for 10 seconds always helped.

I just popped into the forum to see if anyone had a Nova issue like mine and found this thread. I had a firmware update a few days ago, listened to some music since and all seemed fine and last night I noticed the standby light was shining VERY brightly. I went over to the unit and noticed that half of the volume lights on the dial were on brightly too. The unit was in standby.
I tried to switch it off but it was unresponsive. I disconnected the power supply, reconnected and it is now totally unresponsive. Seems totally dead.
It is a 2019 unit.
Can anyone offer advice?

Well, it happened again today.

Nova was not showing in the app. So, switched it on at the unit. Nothing on the screen, nor response from the remote control. Tried holding the on/off switch in for 10 secs+, no response. The light around the volume control was going on and off but nothing else happening and still not visible in the app.

Switched off at the mains (checked that the mains cable was properly in the unit) left for 30 secs+ and turned back on. Unit rebooted and became responsive again and reappeared in the app.

Doesn’t appear to have had a firmware upgrade.

No idea what is going on.

How old is the firmware?

Up to date, 3.11.0.

Spoke to my dealer today and we agreed I would monitor how often it happens and if it keeps happening he will talk to Naim.

I had a Nova for 2 years from new which I part exchanged 6 weeks ago. Periodically wouldn’t play anything, sometimes would only play radio. Turning it off and on helped most of the time, the occasional factory reset was needed. Naim claimed it was my connection every time which I knew to be untrue. Hasn’t happened yet with my 333 (fingers crossed). Very temperamental in my opinion.

Just to balance that, I’ve had a Nova since it was first released. During that period it’s been rock solid and has never exhibited anything of the kind you mention. (I don’t deny you had an unfortunate experience but am merely indicating that it’s probably not typical.)

I’ve a Nova from new, which has been almost flawless, but with the occasional odd behaviour (screen meno not showing, random power offs, all resolved with a power off/on.

On the other hand, I have a used Star that has had endless problems. Overheating and shut downs, and now with the last two firmware upgrades, getting stuck in an endless update loop. I had resolved that the first time after numerous power offs and factory resets and reinstalling the firmware from a PC. At the moment, with the last update, it’s just totally stuck. It’s likely a failed streaming board (not uncommon), which is a pretty expensive repair.

Yeah, great when they work, but certainly a not insignificant number have problems. And when the streaming board goes, you can’t even use it as a amp.
