Uniti series and HDMI question…

I am considering buying an Atom, or even possibly the new CI Uniti 102 for use on a 1 year old Sony Bravia in our lounge area. I am curious as to how well owners of Uniti’s etc. have gotten along with the HDMI input section of them, any issues overall? I know, probably a rather dull question, and I wasn’t even sure whether to post this here or the Streaming section of the forum? Appreciate any input given!

One thing I might add, I already have HDMI cables coming through wall from TV to rack where the Uniti would go, but not an easy way to get optical there, hence the HDMI question. This will only be used for two channel, not surround. Thanks again!

The HDMI on the Uniti series works well.
Finding the right setting in the Sony Bravia menu system to get the TV to output a signal that the Uniti can decode is not so easy. With my Panasonic TV it was easy. With a friend’s Bravia, it took some time to work out which sub-menu you need to find. However, if you have got your head around the weird Sony menu system, you should be fine.

Thank you Paul, appreciate the comments. I will have to poke around on the Sony a bit, wasn’t aware of actual HDMI settings themselves, always aware of audio/PCM options when using optical however. Quite some time ago, I had just read/heard of some grumbling about issues with the Uniti products and HDMI. I certainly do not want to purchase something that is going to be a headache of course! Thanks again!

I think the setting(s) you want are in the audio menus if memory serves, but it wasn’t obvious where to either to my friend or me; neither of us has any Sony kit.

I might have been one of the grumbling persons! I have an Atom and a Sony Bravia. I did not have any difficulty with the Sony TV settings, and I did get the Atom to work via the HDMI, however I found it quite unreliable. Sometimes it would need a restart or two. I tried out other devices that could use HDMI from the TV and had no problems. It seemed that Naim had a less than robust HDMI interface. However I found that using the optical output from the TV was no problem. It may be that Naim have since resolved the issue and the current firmware works fine, but it could also be a hardware issue and is still problematic. Also keep in mind that the Atom is only 40 wpc into 8 Ohms, and so unless you have quite sensitive speakers, you may find it a bit underpowered for movies. I would not recommend the Atom for use with a TV, especially if the optical input is not readily available.

For me HDMI was unreliable using an Atom with a Samsung TV. I gave up and used Toslink for a while, and now just use Bluetooth. Slight loss of convenience with no automatic input switching etc. but both solutions are reliable and lip sync is better.

Thanks for the comments so far, much appreciated! Thought of using Atom, or any of the Uniti models would be fine for my use, not expecting bombastic episodes here, just good/reasonable use for films, music and what not.
