More likely CD mechanisms availability rather than CD’s….
So if the cd player konks out in a few years, it could be rendered useless?
The mech suddenly ceased production. Naim have been trying to find a suitable replacement mechanism for the Star but have been unsuccessful. Under those circumstances they had to stop making the Star to preserve what mech stocks they still have. They did think they had found a replacement, but then learned that it was suddenly discontinued, which seems to be the way these days. Unfortunately there’s hardly any demand anymore for slot loading disc mechs it seems - computers don’t seem to use them nowadays. There is a logical solution to the problem though. I guess shall see in due course…

So what’s the new philosophy? I refuse to understand what’s happening. Prices are skyrocketing on new products, while old, tried-and-true ones are being discontinued. I thank God for what I have and what works.

I think it’s better for Naim to cease production and reserve the remaining mechanisms for servicing UnitiStars for a number of years, rather than keep making them and be unable to service those already out there at all.

Richard’s comment suggests there may be a Star 2 in due course. The obvious thing to me is replacing a slot mechanism with a drawer (personally I have never liked CD slot mechanisms anyway…). If that is the way they are going, then presumably they would be testing different mechanisms for sound quality, and then there would be whatever case modifications are required which might not be a very big job. I wonder if in doing that they would improve or otherwise modify any other aspects of the Star - maybe make it a Star PE!

Reliable CD mech supply has been the downfall of all Naim’s CD players and music servers……
Not quite sure why though as lesser brands still appear to be able to soldier on, and in the server case there’s always the option of using a USB CD drive, but it all seems to hinge on the ‘not good enough quality for us’ approach.
