Or it could be the medium sized popcorn at the cinema. Nobody actually buys it because the large (Nova) is only a tiny bit more, but many of the people buying the large would have bought the small had it not been there. A nice bit of psychology.

I’d just assumed as it was a cut-down Star (no CD drive) they saw the opportunity to call it starlight.

Exactly: I don’t see anything different other than the lack of a CD drive. I guess Naim decided it wasn’t worth the hassle of sourcing another CD drive so just decided to leave it out. That might mean improved performance with the extra space available to optimise the internal layout.
The previous Uniti range included 4 models, so leaving out one of the 3 original products makes it look like a limited selection to choose from.
This will make sense to many people - those for whom £1000 is a significant amount of money.

They actually went through quite a bit of “hassle” in trying to find a suitable drive. Indeed, I was told that they thought they had found one that would be suitable and had worked on integrating it, but when they wanted to order a bunch for production they were informed that the maker had ceased making it and wouldn’t be replacing it. It seems that there’s little or no demand for computer slot CD/DVD these days, or at least nowhere near enough to make continued production viable.

Maybe, although it does fly in the face of quite a few other manufacturers across the price spectrum…….
Nevertheless, perfectly understandable in the context of Naim’s product set.

I guess this makes good business sense to repurpose by deleting the cd drive, but silly old me was hoping for something totally new, oh well.

Interesting piece of kit that a few people have been asking for. I’m slightly tempted to trade in my SU and UQ2 for one.

The new Starlite is not going to run concurrently with the original Star - that model has now been dropped - not surprisingly there are already some good deals on brand new Stars as it’s effectively a discontinued model. The Starlite is actually £300 cheaper than the outgoing Star’s RRP.
On the one hand the new model appears to have lost its USP (the CD drive) however I recall owners having issues with the CD mechanism. At face value the Starlite is simply a cheaper (better value) Nova, but I remember reading several threads where the Star and Nova where compared and the general consensus was that they sounded different with the Nova having more body and grunt, attributed by some to the beefier toroidal transformer fitted to the Nova.

I’ve compared both and got the Star partly because of the CD drive, but mainly because the difference wasn’t that large. A big step up from the Atom, but not so much from the Nova. They were of course technologically not that different.
So the one thing I wonder about is the supposed “nice little performance uptick”. Wouldn’t that take it dangerously close to the Nova? What have they changed, I guess they took the preamp section from the HE ?

Maybe the Nova is going to be updated with a “nice little uptick” in sound quality and maybe an Atom HE level headphone stage - to effectively replace the Supernait?
