Would the Sony PS-LX310BT Bluetooth Turntable with built-in Phono Pre-Amp, 2 speeds and 3 gain modes be suitable to link with the Atom ? it Had a built in Phono stage so might be ok?
It will certainly work but personally, I’d feel inclined to go for a Rega Planar 1 Plus Turntable with in-built phono stage.
Cheers blyth it’s a toss up between the two with the rega being £100-£150 more. Can get the Sony one for about £200
Why is the planar better do ya think?
There are a lot of lower budget turntables with built in phono stage , I would look a little bit more expensive. The Atom will show up any shortcomings in other sources .
If it was me I would be going for a Technics 1500
I run a P3 Anniversary with a Parks Audio Waxwing via optical into my Atom
Rega have long been known for their very good quality products and for many years, they ONLY made turntables.
Although I haven’t made a direct comparison, I would be extremely surprised if the Rega doesn’t outperform the Sony by a considerable margin.
Paired with a high quality product such as the Atom, I feel the quality difference of the Rega would be noticeable.
The Technics referenced above is even more expensive by quite a margin!
Rega makes much more than TTs these days. Their amps, phono stages, CDs and speakers are highly regarded as are the Turntables they built their reputation on and continue to manufacture.
Just curious guys would a Audio Technica sound burger be compatible with the Atom ?
In a purely technical sense, yes, that combination would produce sound.
All turntables are compatible. Some have built in phono stages and can be connect direct to the atom. Some require a phono stage, and the phono stage will be connected to the atom.
Yes it will work. How you get on with these modestly priced turntables depends on how decent a sound you are after. I briefly used a Planar 1+ and found that it couldn’t make a piano sound like a piano. The Atom is a high quality unit and if you want to enjoy your records with decent SQ then you are really looking at something like a Rega 2 with their intro phono stage. But if you are happy with a lower quality then those mentioned will be fine. Do you just want a bit of fun, or to enjoy a good hifi sound?
The Atom will show the limitations of BT, and the Sony record deck, also, the Rega will allow you to adjust tracking weight which the Sony probably will not.
I’m using my P9 with my Atom at the moment. Sounds great.
With a sensible pair of speakers and suitable room the Atom is absolutely fantastic. Definitely P1.
Thanks everyone you are all so very helpful. Just a bit of background on why I’m perhaps I’m not taking the plunge into wanting to spend a lot of money.
I lost a huge chunk of my hearing during brain surgery at the end of 2020 to remove a kind of tumour and I’m trying to find my way back to music again I use two hearing aids now sadly - my audiogram is not pretty.
The Atom I got just before everything went wrong. I was trying to build a bit of a great system back then with the Atom as the brains.
Within a modest budget I’m now trying to make something cool where I can link the Atom up to playing records and cds. I kind of don’t want to put LOADS of money into it now in case it doesn’t go quite how I want it to due to my hearing loss which would be even more upsetting. I’m learning on the job so to speak regarding the technical side of things but I’m still in love with the original intention when I got the Atom so trying to bring that together as best as possible but on the cheap doing the Cd player and record player around maybe £300 - £400. I’m not sure about going second hand either just in case it causes more headaches if it goes wrong.
I’d be inclined to forget the CD player and rip the CDs to a hard drive, which you can connect to the Atom. Put the money into a decent TT that you can really enjoy listening to records with. If you get a crappy TT you won’t enjoy it and it will be money down the pan.
This is a TEAC , priced around £600 with a built in phono stage , so well below Technics but above Rega 1
Agree with that.
You could also just buy a cheap CD player and run the digital optical/coax into the Atom.
What’s good about the Atom is that it’s great looking and sounding little box. If you start adding other boxes it rather misses the point. A TT yes, but other stuff?
I was thinking this but wasn’t sure if it wouldn’t be good or work properly? Do you mean like a really small almost portable one with the correct input/output ?
