Upgrade pre-amp from Supernait2

Thanks Richard, TBH current NZ distributor does not fill me with confidence, more of a “ship ‘em out” retailer than the audiophiles’ friend, so that gives me a bit of a dilemma…. Tom.

Yes, please respect forum rules regarding discussion of unauthorised modifications to Naim equipment, which include non-Naim Burndy cables. Naim strongly advise against their use. At best, they will not give you Naim’s intended performance, and at worst may cause operational issues, or even damage to the connected Naim equipment. Needless to say, their use will very likely void any Naim warranty.

Hi Richard, please advise how I can contact your colleague regarding the pots8 board. I am in the middle of re-capping my XPS2 NAC 52 and Supercap, using Chris Murphy who was the local Naim repair guy in NZ for many years. The XPS has returned & there is already a significant upgrade. Obviously the 52 will be back soon, but if I could get that board it could be installed at a later date. Cheers! Tom.

You should contact Naim - support@naimaudio.com. Note that Naim have a strict policy of only shipping parts out to their dealers and distributors.

Thanks Richard - I will try and work through this…. Tom.

Straight out of the box & even without POTS8 the re-capped 52/SC sounds great….. Tom.

Not sure if this would be relevant now, as you are considering 500 series stuff. Anyhow, my experience with the SN2 and upgrade path was that just adding a Nap250 to the bare SN2 was a huge upgrade. It really took the Nait to a much more enjoyable level. Conversely, a Supercap2 on the bare SN2 was not a good match. Initially sounding cleaner and more dynamic, it soon became tiresome, wearing and unnaturally voiced.

When I bought the SN2 I thought it would be useful as I could leave it powered up and then I could connect my TV to the system for music videos (concerts, not MTV!) and suchlike. However when I was having a hi-fi play and plugged in the EAR 509s it was clear that the SN2 was compromised; so the TV hook-up went out the window because you wouldn’t keep tubes powered up 24/7. Hence the acceptance that the remaining pre-amp section was probably the weak link, even with a non-Naim PSU followed by a hi-cap - both of which brought improvements (but in different ways)
So on to the 52/SC combo. I reinstalled the SN2 whilst they went away for a re-cap & music was still enjoyable but when the 52 returned then “wow”.
What I have learnt is the standard Supernait upgrade is pre-amp PSU followed by separate pre and finally power amp replacement, but I went a different route. I will probably keep the SN2 for a system in my home workshop as the resale value is pretty low. My main system is a keeper……. Tom.

Not really my experience, i think the pre section is the strongest part. Of course, by adding a power amp, you are allowing the Supernait to allot a far better supply to the pre also, so both sections get an improvement.

I wonder if this applies to the SN3 as well? When the time comes for me to upgrade my initial thought was to leave the SN3 in amp mode and upgrade to a used 282 or maybe stretch some for the 332.
