I have an old Technics SLQL15 Linear tracking turntable plugged into my Yamaha AV Surround as this comes with a Phono Stage but I would rather disconnect the front surround speakers and use my Focal Floor standing as the front lh+rh for the av with the Stereo plugged into them as well but obviously only using one at time either the Naim or the av. So there will be 2 wires each in either speaker connectors. Will this damage the Naim setup in any way going that the power is always on? Thanks for thoughts in advance.
Get yourself a Beresford speaker and amp switch TC 7220. You can pick them up used for £60 or £70.
I have my Naim amp and AV amp connected to switch and 2 sets of speakers connected. I can switch the Naim amp between 2 sets of speakers in two rooms and use my Focal speakers in two rooms. Sopra 2s in living room and Aria 936s in conservatory.
Works brilliantly and safely with no sound quality issues.
The damage could be done if you accidently turned volume up on both. I wouldn’t do what you are suggesting. It just seems dodgy to me. An accident waiting to happen.
Thanks for the info, I wasn’t sure and I knew there would be someone with the knowledge on here.
I was just wondering the sane thing. Now that i’ve moved the naim system to the same side as my tv, i have two sets of speakers next to each other.
Would be great to be able to remove the smaller av bookshelf speakers and just use the floor standers for both the naim system and av duties.
Looking at the beresford manual it states that you need to turn all the connected amps off, select the relevant amp on the beresford, then switch the relevant amp on.
Not sure this will work for me as the av amp will be used most of the time and the naim system as and when. But, i need to keep the Naim amp on, i dont switch it off anymore?
@Dan_M Do you switch your amps off? How do you deal with this?
I have had Beresford switch for around 6 years or more and always used with Naim and AV amps.
Yes, I have seen that in the instructions. Never had a problem. The important thing if you think about it is don’t simultaneously have the two amp buttons on the Beresford switch selected at the same time. You would have to hold them in at the same time to do that. As you select and push one switch in, the other one pops out to off position.
I leave both amps on all the time. Obviously Beresford are covering themselves. You just need to make sure that noone else using the system can play around with it and simultaneously push both amp buttons in.
I have 4 kids ranging from 4 to 20 and have never had any problems with this set up.
If I change from music to AV I just get up and push the switch in the TV cabinet.
@Dan_M Thanks for the info. I think i will try one out. Was about to change my av setup for a sound bar as the extra pair of speakers was annoying me, but this could be a much better and cheaper solution.
Plus i can replace the av rears with the av fronts as they are much better.
Will, need to source some better speaker cable than the av stuff to go between the speaker switch and the front floorstanders. Does this need to be naim friendly? Ie naca4/5 standard?
The naca4 (3.5m length) will go from naim amp to beresford. Then hopefully another decent quality 1m length from beresford to speaker.
So I use Naca 5 from Naim amp to switch. Naca 5 from switch to livining room speakers. Long lengths from speakers in conservatory Linn K20 to switch. Then a cheaper cable av amp to switch. So I use 2 speaker set ups and 2 amps.
So the cables that need to be Naim friendly are from switch to speaker and Naim amp to switch.
So effectively I have 5 metre lengths Naca 5 to switch and 3.5m lengths from switch to speaker. This creates an effectively 8.5m length of naca 5.
So you just need your existing cable from naim amp to switch and then some more naca 4 or 5 from switch to speaker. 1 or 2 metres depending on spacing will be okay. As long as it’s specced for Naim. Linn K20 is cheaper than Naca5 and meets Naim spec.
The set up for me is briilliant and means the speakers get more use. I find that the best speaker cable should be from switch to speakers. The speakers in conservatory are secondary so I went for long runs of K20.
If you go for Beresford switch it will give you the option of running speakers into another room like the kitchen or dining room and playing muisc in there.
Thats brill. I’ll look at the Linn K20 cable looks great value compared to nac a5
