Vintage amp with phono stage, headphone amp and mono switch

I’m looking for something that fits the above bill for sub £300 - £400 so far I have the A&R Cambridge A60 the Magnum IA 170 and the Nytech CTA 252 can you think of any others I should look for and advice I’m not looking for a main system just something I can listen to my records on mainly Jazz and Reggae in peace without spending the earth. Thanks in advance.

PS I’ll buy the headphones to suit the amp.

The Teac A-H500i has well reviewed headphone amp and mm stage but no mono button.
I sometimes use mine with turntable and headphones, plus tape out to QB.

Build quality and finish is different class.

Arcam Delta 90 - it has ample power good headphone amp andMM/MC phono stage, and also a mono switch. I use one in my workshop (along with a Delta 80 tuner) and it’s a great workhorse for testing other kit as it accommodates just about anything and sounds great to boot.

The fantastic NAD 3020i.. should fit your budget used and has phono input, headphone socket and mono, and low level switch… a very beautiful 20 watts per channel into 8 ohms with sizable headroom. They come up from time to time on eBay.
I still have mine.

Luxman A-353. They were made in black and in champagne. I had one for many years. You can still find them in the second hand market for a few hundred euros.

The NAD was a great amp, I had the earlier version along with Rega Planar 3 and KEF Concord round about 1979 ish. Just checked the price when introduced in 1978 - £71 !

My first serious amp which I still have in the loft. Very unusual styling which invites comments but IMHO sound wise it beat NAD, Yamaha and Arcam in dealer demos.

The Sugden A48 Mk 2.

It has two MM inputs, 2 Tape and 1 Tuner, headphone output, drives 2 sets of speakers, mute and quiet facilities.

I had the Arcam Delta from the late 80’s to 2000’s. Travelled with me around various international assignments and never any problem. Used a Yamaha CD player mainly though the LP12 was also used. Played to Ruark speakers - many happy years of listening

Thanks some great suggestions I had actually been looking at the Sugden A48 Richards Arcam Delta 90 looks really interesting I just had a quick look and discovered the Delta 60 has a mono switch too.

As well as the extra power I think the 90 has tone controls also I wonder if the headphone amp and phono stage are equal though.

The 3020e was my entry into quality HiFi. Later I bought a 7020i receiver for my parents living room and infrequently use it myself.

My first “proper” hifi amp too. Bought new from Hampshire Audio in Chandlers Ford! Happy days. Late 1970s :slightly_smiling_face:

(Eventually replaced by a Nait 2.)

Thread drift……sorry !

Just won the Sugden A48 Mk3 auction for £249 visually not the best of the three Sugdens and probably not the best choice for a headphone amp but I’m sure after a service I’ll also have some fun with it connected up to some speakers.

Now which headphones, any suggestions?

I’ve had a brief Google which state older Sugdens typically have a wide range headphone impedance 4 - 2000 ohms.
