You may have noted I have a NAC62, HICAP and NAP140, all “Chrome Bumper” of course, but I will say it did not seem VFM at the time, though as I have kept this set for over 30 years, taking a long view, it seems so now. Maybe I could get back what I paid but there is an inflation calculation to make here, shall I use house prices in the SE of England!
…cannot use my income, which has gone downwards over the same 30 years…
(ps… the house prices are so inflated one son is unable to move to his own house, if he wants to buy, just too expensive in this congested corner of England)
I agree, nowdays a good example NAC62 and NAP140 (with or without the HICAP) makes a very good system to start with Naim, and in my case, has been the end of my Naim story (boring really).
I haven’t been keeping such a close eye on prices in recent years. It used to be that you could pick up a nice NAC42/NAP110 set for around £300 but probably £500 is more realistic now, and of course, you need to factor in the value of any recent service work. Note that service work by Naim or Class A will increase value, but service by unauthorised servicers can detract.
Of particular interest for collectors are the very earliest units from '79-'80 which used a slightly shorter case than later units.
The NAIT2 is a fantastic ‘box’, but an NAC72/NAP140 is better, and you have the possibility of part exchanging the NAP140 for an NAP250, which is in a different league altogether.
(I have a vague recollection that the NAIT2 can be configured to operate as just a control amp, but I have no practical experience of this.)
It’s not really worthwhile to convert a NAIT 2 to just be a pre-amp. Better to trade for a shoebox pre-amp and also pocket a fair bit of change into the bargain.
The NAITs are not as capable as the pre/powers but have a charm to their performance that’s all their own - lovely and very characterful. As ever, you do need a top source though and speakers that will bring out the best in them; i.e. efficient. Pair a NAIT with a Linn Sondek and a pair of Royd Minstrels and you’ll love it.
I cannot answer that question here - forum rules and all that…
All three boxes were serviced by Class A a few years ago, for the first time, the account is somewhere on the forum, so all good to go for the next 30 years…
The Global Shipping Program which is available through ebay is good - as good as the carrier will do the job, but with careful packing is good. I have sent slide projectors to Australia, arrived safely with no damage, (I know how to pack), and in 4 days! Remarkable service.
Some other overseas buyers use something similar, and I have sent delicate instruments to odd addresses in the UK to access these services.
I bought a freshly serviced 110 from Class A about 18-months ago. That was £400 in mint condition but without original box. That was a fair price at that time but they may have gone up a touch since then.
I was offered a combination of NAC42.5 or NAC62 and NAP140 and also HiCap power supply today. All CB. I am still waiting for photos right now from the seller. The nice thing is that it is only about 45-60 minutes away from me by car.
A great way into naim with those two/three. If not serviced, id see that as a positive. Simply send to Darran, to bring them back to their design state.
