I have a Lumin U2 connected to the network optically. I also use the inbuilt network switch to connect a NAS. Everything is working fine. I have bought a managed switch and want to apply a VLAN to stop potential interference with the Lumin. I am however a networking noob!
I’ve set a VLAN (No 2 in the photo) specifically for the Lumin. Does this look OK? Port 9 is the SPF port and Port 8 has the connection to the router. I don’t need to include the NAS as this is connected directly to the U2.
You will note that IGMP snooping is turned off. What’s the view about enabling this?
I have the older non SFP version of that switch, the menus look a bit different but IGMP should be under the multicast section.
Does your router support VLANs, if it doesn’t traffic from the rest of the network will be forwarded to VLAN 2 on the switch as it’s untagged when connected the router.
IGMP Snooping needs to be turned ON. Home audio is heavily reliant on multicast groups for discovery and other functions. IGMP snooping ensure that the correct ports ar enabled for specific multicast groups and dont cause interference to devices not associated wit the group.
Is there a reason you are setting up VLANs… and what interference are you thinking of? You are using switches so unicast interference is eliminated, and multicast interference is managed with IGMP snooping.
The only thing that will be common is the occasional broadcast message - which in the grand scheme of things is a drop in the ocean.
Hi thanks. I understand that the Virgin Superhub 5 supports VLAN. If I want to continue with VLAN, are there any other tags I need to create or delete in VLAN2?
Hi thanks Simon. I’ll activate IGMP
snooping. I wasn’t certain about creating a VLAN for my system and will likely accept your advice and delete VLAN2 I have set up. In truth I don’t know what I am doing and probably shouldn’t dabble!
If you want to use the 8 port switch for the connection to the Lumin and for your normal network you’d need to assign a different IP address for vlan 2 on your Superhub 5 and pass your normal vlan as untagged and vlan 2 as tagged on the incoming connection on the switch and set the port that connects to the Lumin as a vlan 2 port untagged.
Thank you. This is completely ‘over my head’ (no criticism of your explanation). I will delete what I have done, revert to factory settings and enable IGMP Snooping.
@Simon-in-Suffolk & @NogBadTheBad
I have deleted the VLAN I created. Thanks for your help with that. I have enabled IGMP snooping but left other settings alone - including the ‘multicast filtering’ setting shown in the screenshot.
Hope this is OK and there is nothing else you can suggest?
