Volume control and remote

I have a NAC 82 with a Pots 8 volume control. The remote control will not move the volume knob past the 10 o’clock position without stopping. I can physically turn the knob beyond this position and the sound is controlled perfectly. I have changed the batteries in the remote but no change. Any ideas how I can fix this please?

My only thought here is that the volume knob has been turned too far anticlockwise. If you turn it manually, goes it go silent at about 7 o’clock? If it goes further than this you’ll need to turn it to maximum and then turn it a bit further so that the range is centred 7 o’clock to 5 o’clock. I hope that makes sense!

yes it goes silent at 7 o’clock

The other thing you can do is to pull the knob off and see whether the wires are somehow twisted. You may not feel confident to do this, so I’m copying @NeilS of Naim for further guidance.

Usual reason for this is that the rubber ring around the knob is fouling on the fascia. Test this by removing the rubber ring & knob face (just by pulling it off). (No knob funnys please!) See if the remaining knob back then rotates fully.

If so - there is a grub screw (flat head) that can be loosened through the little access hole & the knob back can be pulled slightly forward & the grub screw retightened, so that the rubber ring (when refitted) will avoid the fascia.

If not, the shaft of the pot may be bent.

Thanks Neil, The problem is caused by the two twisted wires attached to the Pot at about 11 oclock the wires cross each other and bind which is enough to stop the pot motor. If I manually wind the pot just beyond this binding the motor is free again to continue onwards using the remote. Not sure how to fix this.

I was about to post to recommend you check the wires haven’t bound up on the shaft - looks like you have found the problem. Just needs careful re-dressing. Perhaps @NeilS can advise further here…

The wires cross at about 11 o’clock and catch.

There isn’t any set method for dressing the wires - sometimes, taking the knob right off, straightening the wires & re-dressing them around the pot shaft is the only way to stop them catching.
