Water meter again……but different

We’ve had a water meter for about three years, and this week it was replaced with a newer version.

Since then I’ve noticed a pulsing sound in the pipes in the loft whenever water is running. It stops as soon as water is turned off. It’s noticeable but not excessively loud.

I’m guessing it’s a bit of air in the pipes. Is it likely it will clear itself over time, or is there something I should do?

Maybe it’s air in the pipe. Is there a tap in loft which you can open to let it out?

Complain to the water company they started it.

Need 70sPete in on this one. He’s good at solving water meter problems.

Stop paying your bill, lawyer up and fight it out in court.

Or run a few taps fast to clear the air…

Had a pulsing sound for 24 years. Mainly near the meter. No harm yet.

Think I’ll go with the running the water approach thanks……as soon as it’s a bit better weather I’ll open the garden taps and all in the house for a few minutes and try to shift any airlocks (we don’t have any outlets in the loft).

If it’s an airlock, try this:

Turn off the stopcock on your incoming mains (usually under the kitchen sink).

Turn on every tap in the house (and outdoors) and flush the loo a couple of times. Wait for them all to stop flowing completely.

Fully open the stopcock.

Wait for all taps to flow properly without sputtering, then close them all.

This often works, but sometimes takes a couple of attempts.

None return valve?

Thanks that sounds logical - I’ll give it a go as soon as the weather improves and I can save at least some of the water.

Not sure what you mean? I know most of the taps have non return valves - are you saying I should fit ne somewhere?

Non return valves can cause noise.

Maybe your new meter came with a new non return valve.

You could try opening or closing the stop kock a little to see if that has any effect.

Thanks I’ll give that a try.
