Weekend in Dublin

I‘ll be over later this week for a funeral. This is getting me in the mood for fringe activities.

Clearly a faulty sensor.

Here in Cornwall my Nikon Z8 has faithfully reproduced the black & grey skies since early November & looks likely to continue to do so for a while longer yet.

So, apart from the beer, what did you see?

Guinness storage museum thing, a prison, Temple Bar, brief dip into Phoenix Park, Stephen’s Green, the National Gallery (some Interesting stuff, some less so but had finalists of their portrait/young portrait exhibition, many of which I found more enjoyable than things like the Romantics) Trin College, hop on hop off tour, Dublin Castle, a lot of wandering about…

Bizarrely, at one point we were waiting for the hop on bus and I turned to my wife and said ‘That sounds like a horse’ and as I turned round, through the gap in the hedge was this lad walking his little horse. Should have had my phone in hand…

I’ve only been to Dublin three times, for business meetings, with an overnight stay before flying back so one evening each time to look around. Each time I stayed just south of the river, not far from centre. On the first I wondered around, and after Temple Bar area I crossed the river and wondered slightly west, stumbling across an interesting and rather quaint pub called L. mulligan Grocer(!). They had a good selection of real ales, which is more to my taste than Guinness (which is decent enough if I want a pint and no good real ate, but not a drink of choice), so I stayed. They had a restaurant attached, but it was fully booked so while there enjoying the beer and music I had a snack at the bar. It was delicious. On the next occasion that I was in Dublin I booked Mulligan’s for dinner, which I had with an Irish whiskey food pairing, and I had a very pleasant evening.

The third and last time I visited I was there for the Friday night before Saint Patrick’s Day in 2020, when Covid was ramping up rapidly, for a few people around and pubs closing early - so I just got to enjoy a couple of hours in the pub adjoining the hotel where they were just a couple of musicians and only a couple of dozen other people.

I did enjoy those visits to Dublin, and sometime plan to do a much longer visit and travel around Ireland but definitely including Dublin along the way.

Temple Bar pic I made printed and hung…
