Christine Collister - Love - WAV CD rip
Superb set of classic rock songs, some hits, some fine album tracks, simple mainly acoustic backing, fantastic interpretations by Chris Collister in her beautiful alto. Wonderful album, worth it for the a capella version of Joni’s Amelia alone. I wish I’d picked up the Roy Gandy LP issue back, then.

Ketil Björnstad - The Light

Ketil Bjørnstad (Piano), Randi Stene (Mezzo-Soprano) and Lars Anders Tomter (Viola).

Streaming on NAS… taking out Ketil for a mid-afternoon spin and this trio is sounding sublime! Music and poetry always a fine combination, words from Ketil for the ECM webpage, "Subtitled “Songs of Love and Fear”, “The Light” brings together Ketil Bjørnstad’s “Four Nordic Songs”, compositions for female voice and accompaniment written over a 30 year period, with a song cycle based on poetry of John Donne (1572-1631). Bjørnstad: “The intellectual energy in Donne’s poetry, which was always receptive to the metaphysical, is also nurtured by emotional excitement, and it is this unique combination that has held such powerful appeal to me as a composer.”

The Go Betweens. The best album of their second coming it’s such a shame Grant McLennan died suddenly in 2006, they’d certainly kicked into a relaxed sound that still sounds fresh today. Stripped back the strings, almost a live sound. It does help that it’s so local, the track Darlinghurst Nights was written when Robert Forster lived around the corner from my studio in the mid 90’s. Excellent album. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Swingout Sister - It’s Better to Travel, on vinyl from 1987. Very good repro = lovely to have Corine’s wonderful vocals front and centre.

Great bop to get one awake in the morning and still sounds fresh as a daisy today - albeit the title is a bit ironic and it’s certainly a ‘Twilight world’ in some places. Plus ‘Breakout’ is probably on many people’s minds.

Very good album IMV.

I bought this album last year and Darlinghurst Nights knocked me out what a track almost had the song on a loop all day.

I just love a great cover and one you look at and know you’re going to love the music before you hear it.

I love the way John always sounded effortless.

Joe Cocker - Sheffield Steel, on vinyl - originally 1982.

This was the relaunch of Joe’s career with the change to Island Records, in the process teaming up with Sly & Robbie. The gravel voice continues but it’s much more controlled.

Great album.

I’ve seen a biographical programme about Joe and (IIRC) the timeline stopped before this album, probably because the productionco. didn’t have/couldn’t access/wouldn’t pay for the rights to this and what followed. Kinda only half a book on what Joe achieved.
