Steve Winwood Arc of a Diver
The album that started it all… One day when I was 9 or 10, I found this strange looking album in my older brother’s collection. I put it on and of course, BOOM… straight into Immigrant song… For a young boy raised on a very strict diet of church and Gilbert and Sullivan, this was a complete revelation. I was transfixed… And the die was cast. A rocker was born, and still am!
I’ve just bought that one!
That plus Let’s Get it On and What’s Goin’ On are his best albums IMO.
Def Leppard

Yes, got those two, just needed the third. As you have said, his better albums!
On CD…
Great write-up Neil, and what an album to start a lifetime passion with!

Dire Straits
Brother In Arms
If I had to pick which Dire Straits album is their best it would be between Brother In Arms and Love Over Gold, but feel Brother In Arms would win it.

Thanks Claude, and yes, what a start!
Jacques Offenbach Romantique. Jérôme Pernoo, cello. Les Musiciens du Louvre, Marc Minkowski. Archiv CD.
According to the (excellent) CD booklet, before he became a famed composer, Offenbach was a cello virtuoso, to the point that he was called “the Liszt of the cello.”
This CD includes the world premiere recording of Offenbach’s long lost original Cello Concerto, reconstructed from different sources in Paris, Cologne and Washington by cellist Jérôme Piernoo through extended archival search … and sheer luck.
“In this concerto, Offenbach exploits the full range of the instrument’s possibilities, taking the soloist to the extreme of what is technically possible, and what isn’t. […] acrobatics and traps of every sort. Nothing is spared the virtuoso.”
Marc Minkowski and his Musiciens du Louvre are at their best, and the sound quality of this live recording is excellent.

From the last decade of the mighty Fall. Another career highlight. For me, like Dylan, each and every album has something great or good or essential about it.
1991 release with great cover of Roxy Music’s
If There Is Something.
