King Jammy’s - New Sounds of Freedom, Jammys (2016).

Back in 1981 when King Jammy was still a Prince he remixed Black Uhuru’s Love Crisis LP from 1977 and released it asBlack Sounds of Freedom it is t that record that forms the basis of New Sounds of Freedom an excellent collection of tracks from Reggae stars young and old that is much more than just a tribute LP it takes the essence of each track and along with stars like Chronixx and U Roy comes up with something new.

Mary Chapin Carpenter (Acoustic Guitar, Vocals), Ethan Johns (Drums, Electric Guitar, Mandolin, Percussion, Synthesizer), Duke Levine (12 String Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Mandolin), Luke Levine (Electric Guitar), Nick Pini (6-String Bass, Electric Bass, Double Bass, Moog Synthesizer), Matt Rollins (Hammond Organ, Piano) and [Jeremy Stacey (Drums, Hand Chimes, Percussion).

Streaming on Qobuz (96/24)… kicking off today’s exercise routine and continuing on with Mary Chapin Carpenter and release from this past August and she and the band are sounding sublime! I have loved her music throughout her career and have been fortunate to see her perform on a number of occasions.

Frédéric Chopin / Felix Mendelssohn, Cello Sonatas. Janos Starker, cello; Gyorgy Sebok, piano. Mercury Living Presence LP (Speakers Corner reissue).

This LP features two very interesting cello sonatas: Chopin’s in G minor op. 65 was his last work to be published during his lifetime; it’s also one of the very few works he composed for instruments other than the piano. As for Mendelssohn’s No. 2 in D major, its interest lies first and foremost on the extended use of counterpoint, a by-product of Mendelssohn’s passion for Bach’s music.

Interpretation is first class: Janos Starker is generally recognized as one of the best cellists of all time. A child prodigy, he started teaching cello at the age of 8! Gyorgy Sebok and him played together for years.

Sound quality of the Mercury Presence / Speakers Corner reissue is excellent. It may sound a little too laid back for some, but to me that’s exactly how chamber music should be recorded.
