A review many years ago drew parallels with Billie Holiday, certainly the wikipedia background suggests a hard life.
There are, like Cohen, elements of humour written into her songs.
I discovered her music at a time when Mary Black was the darling of the hifi demo. The album Tired and Emotional held its own for me.
ah, sorry, forgot the essential information…Doh
musicians: Ye Vagabonds - album: The Hares Lament
I’ve inherited a small number of her discs and so far enjoyed this one the best. There was a double Cd set ‘the best of’, but the glue from the inside of the CD digipak was on the CD and I could not get it off.
I get the humour and there is definitely the feel of exploring / communicating the issues in a way which engages rather than reports, if that makes sense? She ‘inhabits’ the messiness of experience in her songs in a way that feels very touching and relatable on a personal level rather than just philosophical…Not sure I can find the right words for what I want to say.
The George Benson album has led me to
Jimmy Smith - Off The Top.
Jimmy Smith - Keep On Comin’, some more '80’s material, this live album featuring Kenny Burrell.
Prompted by a browse on the Jazz thread…
Coleman Hawkins - Wrapped Tight (Jasmine/Impulse)
1965 session re issued many moons back by Jasmine and a Linn Selekt selektion (remember when dealers sold those?)
