Been watching a new US Comedy series called Sprung, brilliantly funny and surreal apparently true story of a group of prison inmates who get early release due to Covid rules, nowhere to go they get invited to the home of the mother of one of them where they form a petty criminal crew with the proviso that they only rob other criminals and bad people, so in the first episode they plot to rob another criminal hoarding toilet rolls..
Anyway it also has a pretty good music soundtrack of mostly Americana and Indie Rock. Americana music mostly passes me by but theres a lot on the soundtrack I want to explore further. For example, the closing credits of Episode 1 has one of the characters surrealy bouncing on a Trampoline whilst the track Family from this album plays…
Yeah, of course I like Lou Reed but I’ve not previously considered him to be “Americana”. I love Lucinda Williams Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle…
I’m a complete no nothing when it comes to “Americana” although very familiar with the term. I looked up the word and if I understood correctly its a bit of a broad all encompassing term similar to say “Jazz” which is an umbrella for so many different styles. I read somewhere that the term was invented by a radio jock who presented a show playing all kinds of American music like Country, Blues, Bluegrass, Folk, Jazz, Rock n Roll etc which he referred to collectively as Americana.
So I may have been listening to some “Americana” without being aware of the label
Guess it’s just comes down to country of origin, if they’re American it’s Americana.
I always thought Americana was that homespun blues/blue grass stuff but ultimately music is just music to me, I either like it or not. As a painter I hate the fact that everyone wants to pidgin hole your “style”.
Americana, as defined by the Americana Music Association (AMA), is “contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues, resulting in a distinctive roots-oriented sound that lives in a world apart from the pure forms of the genres upon which it may draw. While acoustic instruments are often present and vital, Americana also often uses a full electric band.”[3][4]
Likewise. We came to the Bosch party only very recently, we got so hooked we binge watched the whole lot over a few weeks, 2 or 3 episodes most nights then Bosch Legacy. We wished we’d paced ourselves now as series 2 isnt due until next year I think
Amazon did have the full series 1 music on a playlist stream but more recently have cut it down to just 14 tracks. I made my own playlist from the series and now have that permanently (40 tracks).
Great prompt, thanks. I’ve seen John Etheridge several times - he’s one exceptional player. I’ve not heard that album before, but that’s now been remedied through Qobuz.
For Little awing I have to revert to my favourite version: SRV
