Glad you enjoyed reading my post.
Zeppelin at Knebworth must have been amazing and the crowd expectation having not played in the UK since Earls Court in 1975.I have seen the YouTube footage and read somewhere that Robert Plant was nervous and didn’t settle down till later in their set.
Queen must have superb as well.Freddie was such a master at working a crowd like no other.
I only saw Yes twice on the Drama tour in 1980 at the Brighton Centre and Hammersmith Odean .
Have you seen them in the past ?
And any Genesis gigs ?
I saw them Knebworth 78 as you know and Brighton Centre and the Lyceum and Hammersmith Odean in 1980 on the Duke tour .Wembley Arena on the Abacab tour in 81.Hammersmith Odean and Six of the best with Peter Gabriel at Milton Keynes Bowl in 82.
And my last gig was Birmingham NEC on their Genesis album tour.
After that I was getting into different music from people like Andy Kershaw on Radio 1.
And didn’t like the way Genesis had become this AOR diluted pop band.
Sarah Vaughn. Vinyl, EmArcy Acoustic Sounds series (2021).
I normally don’t listen to that record in the middle of the afternoon (it’s terrific late night lounge music), but today I’m glad I did. What a performance. She was a genius, and Clifford Brown’s presence is icing on the cake.
Argh brilliant story Rigsby especially the tickets and the Karma …quality gigs…I was to young for those.
Talking of Tickets this is a funny story.
My girlfriend and I had tickets to see Rage Against The Machine on the tour to promote their first album at Brixton Academy. We travelled up on the train from Brighton.
Massive expectation as their album had got rave reviews and it was fresh and different.
Obviously sold out …Anyway there was barriers going up to the doors and the crowd went up along these barriers. Either side of the barriers people were giving out flyers so I had a handful. But forgot my ticket was with them and just before she gave hers to the door people…I through all the flyers on the floor as there were hundreds on the floor and went to get my ticket, thinking it was in my pocket…I then realised the total fuc@ up I had made. But couldn’t get down to find it as to many people behind in the queue.
I was back on the train to Brighton and home by 9.30..she came in at 1.30 saying what a gig !..you would have loved it… I was so near ..but …
. Mrs R and I went to see Primal Scream at Olympia. Got to the door, went for the tickets, but couldn’t find them, searched everywhere, no joy. We really wanted to see the gig, the whole of Screamadelica, so thought screw it and bought two tickets from a tout (actually, he was really nice about it and brought the price down). Great gig, of course. On the bus back to Oxford I got out my book… You guessed it, I’d used the tickets as a bookmark… That may not have been the first time Mrs R had called me bad names, but it was a memorable one.
Brilliant..you had them all along ..Mrs Rigsby was indeed right to highlight your fuc# up.
Great gig though and such a brilliant album..love Primal Scream. And so much respect for Bobby Gilespie
My worst one was travelling on the train in 1987 from Brighton to buy a Sony Walkman
Professional from The Cornflake Shop in London..got it not cheap about £230 so a lot of dosh in 87.
Anyway on the train back I had a couple of cassettes and unboxed it.Put new batteries in..headphones on ..put it into its carry case ..all good..sounded superb..getting off the train I heard this bang and the walkman had come out of the carry case as I had failed to push a stud securing it in so it was lose…I picked it up off the stone platform and it had split apart…
I only had it maybe two hours and I had already managed to destroy it..
I was very down on myself after that ..as you can imagine..taught me a lesson though to be more careful
I was more friendly with The Cornflake Shop people as my Brighton friends worked there and I was always going up to London and had brought a Naim 250 from them so shop loyalty.
Christian and Xavier then started the Powerplant in Upper North Street in Brighton a couple of years later. We are still best friends.
I did buy stuff from Jeffries and have known Julian for years only as an occasional customer.
He told me he had a Statement the last conversation we had before he retired when I asked out of curiosity what he was using at home …a great guy …sold a lot of Naim over the decades
