What are your sources for new music discovery?

What are your new music inspirations? I love exploring new music of all eras and genres and I’m curious how others are exposed to new artists. I look at a lot of different sources but my main touch points are the following:

  • Naim Audio community forum (not just saying this for the likes)
  • Pitchfork Media website
  • Sirius XM (I’m a big fan of XMU, Indie Rock Radio)
  • My local record shops and their staff (shout out to Red Cat and Neptune Records in Vancouver, BC)
  • The Needle Drop website
  • Gorilla vs. Bear blog (also his Sirius XMU radio show on Thursday night is a family favourite)
  • Rolling Stone website
  • Social media feeds of my favourite artists and labels

Social media + browsing band label catalogs + if a particular band/album is listed as influence on an album I like when reading up on it

Not sure I would say they are inspirations, but the sources for discovering new music would mostly be these:
Bandcamp
BBC Radio 6
Local independent record shops
Recommendations from friends

Edit to add, I do now use Qobuz to listen to other tracks from albums that I have heard the single from and will often buy the LP if I like what I hear.

I continue to read Mojo, Uncut, Record Collector and Rolling Stone. Album Group in work has also been educational.

Zero interest in browsing record shops nowadays but there is joy in browsing new releases on Qobuz and Tidal every Friday morning.

TV soundtracks. Interesting mainly those programmes imported from Australia and New Zealand. Start with Shazam, then track down parts on Bandcamp and YouTube.
Currently working my way through Tami Nielsen. The vocal contrast from Hey Mama to Always On My Mind, I find staggering. Sadly shipping costs of CDs seems prohibitive.
Then of course the great plays from @Camphuw and @Stokie .

Shazam in another good one for sure!

I’d love to have better access to BBC radio. I mostly listen to radio in our kitchen/dining room where we just have a Sonos system (pre-AirPlay) and unfortunately BBC isn’t available on the app in Canada. I’ve listened a bit through the Naim app on the hifi but I prefer to listen to albums when I’m sitting in that room. I’ve been plotting a Muso for the kitchen, maybe I need to move it up my priority list .

Surely, Sonos has BBC Sounds as a service?

Thanks for the great suggestions, Mojo, Uncut and Record Collector haven’t been in my regular news feed.

I do a lot of virtual record browsing using one of my locals shops (Red Cat Records) websites. During COVID then moved all their inventory on-line (new and used) and have been really good at keeping it up to date. I’ll often brows the new arrivals, order on line, and then go to the store to pick it up.

I had to research it but apparently BBC Sound Series is only available on the Sonos app in the UK. Also, the speakers in my kitchen area are first generation which don’t have AirPlay so my only choice is the app.

could you play bbc sounds on laptop and then bluetooth or connect cable from headphone socket to sonos?

You can listen to BBC podcasts apparently, but not download radio programmes (for rights issues). Might be worth seeing if any podcasts contain music? Otherwise, BBC World Service?

BBC Radio 6, especially Cerys Matthews
BBC Radio 3, especially Late Junction, Music Planet, Night Tracks, 'Round Midnight and Unclassified.

‘What are you listening to’ thread here naturally.

For me this forum and Bandcamp have opened my ears to more new music in the past 4 years than I found in the previous 20.

Also, to very limited extent, HFN and Record Review has set me investigating new artsts.

Slicing up Eyeballs is a new one for me. Thanks!

Thanks. I can stream BBC stations through the Naim application so I’m assuming it’s contractual and not regulatory. I spent a portion of my day working form the sofa listening to BBC 6. Great programming.

My business case for a new kitchen system is getting stronger.
