They made a really good job of “Slow Horses”
Though a lot will depend on casting
The Magus is one my all time favourite books. The film with Michael Caine was a lost opportunity. What was it Woody Allen said “ if I had to live my life again, I’d do everything the same, except that I wouldn’t see The Magus”.
Miniseries?
And they did a really good job on Murderbot, with actors (mostly) previously unknown to me… but great picks, great props, great production. Very much hoping Bernie comes to life like Lamb and River. Great book series.
Saw Alwyn’s talk on this at Chalke. A good social history of the period and notable on its influence on more recent times.
Joe invents another fantasy world for his followers. Difficult to describe his work. Worth a try if you like medieval fictional yarns although this forum might not be a target audience.
A young, impressionable monk has been chosen to restore the rightful heiress to her throne after a religious schism. We journey to the East. Elves, vampires and face eaters beset our path.
This story not so full of mud, blood, heroics, cowardice and breaking bones but on a more ‘spiritual’ level
.
I have it on Audible as my bedtime listen. Well over 24 hours long.
Never read it before, I figured once I’ve seen the film more than a few times over the last half century, there are no surprises, I know how it ends.
As is often the case of course, the film takes a much simplified version of the book, with a lot more going on in the ‘back stories’ on the written page. Yes it’s primarily concerned with a big fish that eats people, however a lot more about the still living on Amity Island and the shenanigans hinted at in the film but not developed…
Very similar with The Shining. Seeing the film doesn’t spoil the book.
Quite easy to read in bite size chunks.
Hehe
“Silas Marner”
Andrew Cartmel - Underscore. Latest in the Vinyl Detective series, reading on a Greek beach. If I can’t listen to a good system, might as well read about one. Fancy his Audio Note monoblocks.
Henry IV Part 1. Second in the tetralogy I’m rereading. This one I remember more clearly than Richard II.
(The College Board tutor in me wants to go back and improve the sentence above - but I’ll let it stand.)
Not read the latest one. A lot more pricey than they used to be!
What isn’t? ![]()
True but I think the first half dozen were free through Kindle library!
Finished Henry IV-1. Quite a nice play. Author has talent.
Seriously - how many movies follow the format of the play? Disreputable antihero engaging in hijinks makes good when the chips are down. It even has a teaser for a sequel.
Picked this one out whilst sitting in a friend’s loo, from the stack of “things to read whilst in the loo” books.
I opened it at random to a piece entitled “Touching A Tiger” and laughed out loud at the “mystical philosopher” William Blake being described as “the gibbering 18th century fruitcake”. I admired the attitude so much that I ordered a copy as soon as I got off the throne.
