We were at a showing of the 1922 silent version last week at Woking Nova cinema with a live viola and percussion accompaniment, very good. The images are still quite stunning, I think the chap who accompanied the film may be touring this.
Yep, Murnau’s 1922 version is THE definitive one, good as Herzog’s one is.
Many, many years ago I went to a screening of the Murnau version with a live soundtrack from Faust, including chainsaws on sheets of metal! Memorable for all the right reasons
Watched the reconstructed 1922 version recently but spent alot of the time thinking of..
Shadow of The Vampire is an interesting take on the 1922 version, ‘a making of’ film with an unfortunate casting of the count.
Speaking of Herzog, I just got my 4K HDR version of “Aguirre the wrath of God” yesterday. Looking forward to watching it!
Excellent film - saw it at the Tyneside years ago - memories ![]()
I had never seen “Far and away”, so I decided to buy the 4K version on Blu-Ray disc.
The film is somewhat good, but does not reach the epic level it aspires to.
The 4K disc is also one of the worst I have seen. It is clear that this movie was not properly remastered for 4K and HDR-Dolby vision. It looks like an old DVD.
Skip it!
The Pledge - Nicholson in his benign mode. Good. Netflix.
The Pledge is great.
I like Nicholson as a fine actor despite his being plagued or perhaps honoured (!) by typecasting as the villain. ![]()
The Creator
It’s one flaw is that I could not sympathise with the AI and was rooting for them to be wiped out. Trying to ask the audience to view wiping out AI as a form of moral horror and genocide is a leap too far for me. Which is a shame because it was otherwise an astounding film.
I enjoyed this one but I’m old enough to remember Beatlemania. ![]()
Heart-rending story of an alcoholic fighting her addiction amid a turbulent family life in the remote wilds of Orkney. Excellent performance from Saoirse Ronan. A refreshing contrast to most 2024 releases.
I watched “The hitcher” from 1986 last night. I remember seeing parts of it as a teenager, but I had never seen it in its entirety.
Now I have, and I wish I had not! The movie starts off well, but then becomes more and more ludicrous! A series of impossible things happen.
Warning “SPOILERS”
When the bad guy appears in the motel room from out of nowhere. Can he walk through walls?
When the bad guy is driving a truck at high speed with one hand, and with the other hand weilding a pistol, shoots down a helicopter.
When the bad guy manages to tie up a woman between a semi truck and its trailer.
On and on, this movie had me laughing out loud in some parts.
Heads up - ‘Kelly’s Heroes’ is on BBC2 tomorrow (Sunday) at 1230
Like debating whether to get a streamer or not. ‘Think that bridge will be there and it’ll be there!’

Sorta Dads’ Army goes to France without Arthur Lowe.
Light hearted tale of two dentists who decide their destiny during WW2 was to take the battle to the enemy in France.
Typical British comedy. If you like similar BBC productions give it a whirl.
Not sure I could endorse the Mail on Sunday’s review.
