What is the cheapest pre-amp for NAP 500DR?

Haha.. I do have the thinking of going to Lina DAC and jz a simple Nait 50 in my mind. But I have spend too much in my 500-series (all new mind you!!!) and i just hate hate to sell it off as 2nd hand.

You know tat feeling. I do make the mistake of buying new. Now I know to never ever ever buy new in Hi-Fi if possible.

No. The 72 will require a HiCap. HiCap powers the 72, 500 connects to the HiCap

You can buy new, but you must be very very sure of that product and the after sales services , which is very important. I really hope that you will enjoy your journey. It’s painful to feel what you are going through .

No, you need to connect the 72 to a hicap and then use the outputs from the hicap to the 500.

dCS will be a long time , long term partner in your system , you won’t go wrong with dCS. That’s one big step towards your happiness , comparing to NOW.. keep it up :flexed_biceps:t2::clap:t2::clap:t2:

Tks! :clap::smiling_face_with_horns:

To the OP, I had excellent results with the Townshend Allegri + before I moved to the Allegri Reference.

Clearly I am looking for a quick solution and Olive might present deep knowledge I don’t have. I think probably unwise for me to go into very old pre-amp.

I do agree with Geko that the 72/hicap is likely to give you best results for a low price.

It’s pretty straight forward. The Din/XLR’s that would have come from the 552’s power supply just goes to the Hicap. Simple as that. Took me less than a couple of minutes to have the 72 playing music.

Or the new lina dac x.
Full size unit

Saw that and looked nice. But I hate the way the dCS volume knob turn (when I audition the Rossini), too much without resistant unlike the Alps Blue (which got resistant). I know, I am weird!

But the dCS sound is just so nice.

Well it’s a completely different volume knob to the rossini so it might be better.
Also run it directly into the 500dr no pre amp needed

Use apps to control my friend

No need to tempt you, the gear sells itself once you hear it correctly

It’s not correct. The Cannon XLRs on the NAP500 are single ended.

You can use pretty much any Naim pre-amp with the NAP500, although it must be powered by a dedicated PS. I’ve even tried a NAP500 with a NAC112x and Flatcap. It worked, but lost most of what makes a NAIM special (However, do things the other way around, NAC552 into a NAP150X and the results were spectacular considering it was Naim’s most basic power amp). Probably the most affordable really effective pre-amp with the NAP500 is a good secondhand NAC52. Having said that, I’ve never tried the 500 with a NAC72/HICAP, which could be interesting…

Ya I am searching my local 2nd hand market and see several olive, thus asking here for advise.

So what you have confirmed is that the Naim official PDF spec stating that it is a “true balanced” is a mis-quoted label waiting to be fixed?

Therefore HH is correct.

Correct
Its not true balanced as if so you wouldn’t have one of the 3 pins not used, as that 3 pin is what makes it balanced.

I use my MuSo Qb.
or have a spare Rega IO amp to run a pair of cheap Royd loudspeakers.

Above is splendid in use while main setup(not 500 style) is away.
